It currently contains 383,937 stories selected from 997 scholarly biological sciences journals. This category also provides an Biological Sciences RSS feed which is one of the best and most popular ways of staying up to date with the latest news in this science discipline. One of the latest articles assesses testing four candidate barcoding markers in temperate woody bamboos (Poaceae: Bambusoideae). The authors’ study is a first attempt to test the feasibility of four proposed DNA barcoding markers (matK, rbcL, trnH-psbA and ITS) in identifying 27 species of the temperate woody bamboos, i.e., Arundinarieae. They suggest that the combination of rbcL+ITS, which had the highest species identification power among all combinations, could be used as a potential DNA barcode in temperate woody bamboos. The category also features an article which predicts toxicity of the biofuel candidate 2,5-dimethylfuran in environmental and biological systems. 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) is a leading biofuel candidate, but was found to induce chromosomal damage in cultured murine cells, suggesting that it may be genotoxic. The authors consequently sought to prioritize the environmental and biological impacts of using DMF as a combustible biofuel. Although their results were inadequate for a stand-alone risk assessment of having associations with tumors and systemic diseases, the data suggest that DMF combustion intermediates pose a much broader range of hazards than DMF itself.

One of the latest articles compares the performance of anaerobic reactors for treatment of sago industry wastewater. Sago effluents from cassava starch production pose a serious threat to the environment and quality of life in rural areas of India. According the the article’s authors, anaerobic digestion has proved to be an effective method of treating the sago industry wastewater with simultaneous production of energy in the form of methane. Another newly included article presents a case study on conservation of socioculturally important local crop biodiversity in the Oromia region of Ethiopia. The authors surveyed diversity in a range of local crops in the Lume and Gimbichu districts of Ethiopia, combined with the knowledge of local people regarding crop uses, socio-economic importance, conservation, management and existing threats. Introduction of improved wheat varieties, pest infestation, shortage of land, low yield performance and climate variability were identified as the principal factors contributing to the loss or decline of crop biodiversity in this region of Ethiopia. The category also features an article which analyzes the relationship between a firms greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and its profitability in Japanese manufacturing. The authors conclude that although ISO 141 adoption is generally considered to be an indicator of a firms stance on environmental proactiveness, it does not provide a sufficient incentive to reduce emissions.

Terminal and lateral branch bud break were also under strong genetic control. encouraging ongoing tree improvement efforts in North America and Europe to develop planting stock for the Christmas tree industry. Another newly included article presents results of a meta-analysis of consumer’s willingness-to-pay (WTP) premiums for certified wood products. These indicate that frequently purchased wood products and wood products with lower base prices tend to capture higher percentage premiums and that reported WTP estimates have, consequently, increased in recent years. The category also features an article analyzing actors’ power and interests affecting biodiversity in community forestry in Namibia. Following analysis of the biodiversity of 14 community forests in Namibia, the authors of this article conclude that biodiversity in community forestry depends on the interests of powerful actors who use their power to achieve a positive outcome for biodiversity.

This category also provides a Geography Sciences RSS feed which is one of the best and most popular ways of staying up to date with the latest news in this science discipline. One of the latest articles incorporates spatial dynamics and temporal dependency in land use change models. It formulates an empirical discrete land use model within a spatially explicit economic structural framework for land use change decisions, using the City of Austin parcel-level land use database. The estimation results indicate that proximity to highways and other roadways, distance from floodplains, parcel location in the context of existing development, and distance from schools are important determinants of land use. The authors suggest that major highways may not only physically partition regions, but may also act as social barriers for didactic interactions among individuals. Another newly included article investigates factors governing the distribution and fish-community associations of the round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) in Michigan tributaries of the Laurentian Great Lakes. Round goby sites were larger, had lower channel slopes, less large wood, and less canopy cover than round non-gobyt sites, suggesting that these attributes may promote round goby establishment. The authors’ results indicate that round goby are widespread in eastern Michigan tributaries to the Great Lakes, present in streams with a range of physical habitat characteristics, and that this presence is associated with certain fish species. Mottled sculpin, cyprinids, brook stickleback, white sucker and rainbow trout were associated with goby absence while centrarchids, percids, yellow bullhead, and mud minnow were associated round goby presence. The category also features an article analyzing the 3-D lithospheric structure and regional/residual Bouguer anomalies in the ArabiaEurasia collision (Iran). The authors’ results indicate that Moho depth varies from 42 km at the MesopotamianPersian Gulf foreland basin to 6 km below the High Zagros. The lithosphere is thicker beneath the foreland basin (2 km) and thinner underneath the High Zagros and Central Iran (14 km).

One of the latest articles presents a multilevel analysis identifying the socioeconomic status and tobacco consumption among adolescents in Argentina. Students attending schools receiving social assistance were more likely to smoke and to purchase loose cigarettes, whereas school poverty was significantly associated with secondhand smoke exposure. Unfavorable contextual school characteristics are associated with tobacco consumption and related measures among youth in Argentina. Another article on tobacco use highlights smokeless tobacco and its relation to panic disorder, major depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder in American Indians. Although approximately 30% of American Indian tribal members were lifetime users of smokeless tobacco, the association with lifetime psychiatric disorders was not as strong as those observed with cigarette smoking. The category also features an article on how exposure to acute electromagnetic radiation of mobile phone alters transiently skin homeostasis. The authors investigated the effects of mobile phone exposure on a model of pigmented skin. M-Files 9.0 Flexible Enterprise Content Management Redefines "Hybrid Cloud" with Distributed Content Replication and Long-term Archiving

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) September 04, 2012

M-Files Inc., the developer of M-Files flexible cloud, on-premise, and hybrid enterprise content management (ECM) solutions, today announced that M-Files 9.0 features advanced support for customer deployments with multiple document repositories, also known as vaults.

With the enhanced interaction and cooperation between multiple document repositories, M-Files 9.0 empowers businesses with the flexibility to organize documents and other content along geographic or functional boundaries for maximum responsiveness and efficiency.

“M-Files 9.0 dramatically expands the options businesses have to organize and manage their important documents, information and processes,” said Greg Milliken, president of M-Files Inc. “Data and processes can be efficiently segmented by function, geography, line of business — literally along any organizational boundary. It can reside in the public cloud or a private cloud, or it can be on-premise, or any mixture of all of them, and the user interface and experience is identical.”

Robust Replication Capabilities for Demanding Enterprise Environments

The new replication capabilities featured in M-Files 9.0 ensure that, when needed, information stored in separate repositories can be quickly and easily located and accessed across the organization in a unified and seamless manner. The result is more efficient searches, better performance, fast disaster recovery and greater scalability, especially in larger, more demanding enterprise environments. The new replication capabilities in M-Files 9.0 enable a variety of use cases, including:

Cloud-based backup of an on-premise repository, or vice versa, (i.e., on-premise back-up of a cloud-based repository), which provides robust and instantaneous disaster recovery.
Replication of data between two or more sites, such as a corporate entity and its subsidiaries, or a business with distributed sales offices or retail outlets.
Publishing of select content from a corporate on-premise repository to a cloud-based project vault accessible by external partners, vendors or clients. In this scenario, a business can efficiently provide clients and partners with up-to-date price lists, product descriptions, brochures, and other material from the publishing vault at all times, while still maintaining a tightly controlled central document repository. Replication is metadata-driven enabling specification of dynamic replication rules, such as replication of all approved price lists to the publishing vault.
Moving content and information from an active repository to an archive repository for long-term retention. This example addresses demanding records management requirements, as well as those associated with regulatory or quality compliance.
Collecting information from multiple distributed repositories to one centralized enterprise repository. This use case is common in master data management (MDM) and environments with multiple contractors, vendors or partners working on separate but related systems or projects.

“M-Files employs a unique metadata-driven architecture that transcends antiquated folder-based approaches and is based on the notion that classifying information by what it is, rather than where it is stored, is fundamentally superior,” continued Milliken. “The replication and archiving capabilities in M-Files 9.0 are no exception. Instead of replicating all content to multiple repositories, customers can easily configure replication rules based on metadata, or tags, so only certain types of information and content is replicated according to the needs of the business, such as backup and disaster recovery, long-term archiving, publishing, and improved performance and scalability in large and/or distributed organizations.”

“We work in close cooperation with another company with whom we share certain parts (but not all) of our business. We need to share documents related to the shared business, but not other files,” said Karl Lausten, Owner of Bright Ideas, and an M-Files customer. “With the ability for multiple document vaults to interact and cooperate in M-Files 9.0, we can set up one shared vault — and then let the system replicate relevant documents into the shared vault — while still having our other documents reside in our main central vault, which is not shared. The other company can then access only the specific documents that have been classified as ‘common.’”

In addition to advanced support for multiple document and content vault deployments, M-Files 9.0 offers a variety of new features and enhancements related to mobile access, search, paper document capture and OCR, publishing and collaboration, ease of use and more. The beta version of M-Files 9.0 is currently available, with the official launch scheduled for late September 2012.

About M-Files Inc.

M-Files Inc. develops the award-winning M-Files enterprise content management (ECM) system and cloud-based service M-Files Cloud Vault that runs on the Windows Azure platform.
