ScienceAlerts.com’s Biological Sciences Category covers life and living organisms, including their structure, function, growth, origin, genetics, and distribution. It currently contains 383,937 stories selected from 997 scholarly biological sciences journals. This category also provides an Biological Sciences RSS feed which is one of the best and most popular ways of staying up to date with the latest news in this science discipline. One of the latest articles assesses testing four candidate barcoding markers in temperate woody bamboos (Poaceae: Bambusoideae). The authors’ study is a first attempt to test the feasibility of four proposed DNA barcoding markers (matK, rbcL, trnH-psbA and ITS) in identifying 27 species of the temperate woody bamboos, i.e., Arundinarieae. They suggest that the combination of rbcL+ITS, which had the highest species identification power among all combinations, could be used as a potential DNA barcode in temperate woody bamboos. The category also features an article which predicts toxicity of the biofuel candidate 2,5-dimethylfuran in environmental and biological systems. 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) is a leading biofuel candidate, but was found to induce chromosomal damage in cultured murine cells, suggesting that it may be genotoxic. The authors consequently sought to prioritize the environmental and biological impacts of using DMF as a combustible biofuel. Although their results were inadequate for a stand-alone risk assessment of having associations with tumors and systemic diseases, the data suggest that DMF combustion intermediates pose a much broader range of hazards than DMF itself.

One of the latest articles compares the performance of anaerobic reactors for treatment of sago industry wastewater. Sago effluents from cassava starch production pose a serious threat to the environment and quality of life in rural areas of India. According the the article’s authors, anaerobic digestion has proved to be an effective method of treating the sago industry wastewater with simultaneous production of energy in the form of methane. Another newly included article presents a case study on conservation of socioculturally important local crop biodiversity in the Oromia region of Ethiopia. The authors surveyed diversity in a range of local crops in the Lume and Gimbichu districts of Ethiopia, combined with the knowledge of local people regarding crop uses, socio-economic importance, conservation, management and existing threats. Introduction of improved wheat varieties, pest infestation, shortage of land, low yield performance and climate variability were identified as the principal factors contributing to the loss or decline of crop biodiversity in this region of Ethiopia. The category also features an article which analyzes the relationship between a firms greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and its profitability in Japanese manufacturing. The authors conclude that although ISO 141 adoption is generally considered to be an indicator of a firms stance on environmental proactiveness, it does not provide a sufficient incentive to reduce emissions.

One of the latest articles incorporates spatial dynamics and temporal dependency in land use change models. It formulates an empirical discrete land use model within a spatially explicit economic structural framework for land use change decisions, using the City of Austin parcel-level land use database. The estimation results indicate that proximity to highways and other roadways, distance from floodplains, parcel location in the context of existing development, and distance from schools are important determinants of land use. The authors suggest that major highways may not only physically partition regions, but may also act as social barriers for didactic interactions among individuals. Another newly included article investigates factors governing the distribution and fish-community associations of the round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) in Michigan tributaries of the Laurentian Great Lakes. Round goby sites were larger, had lower channel slopes, less large wood, and less canopy cover than round non-gobyt sites, suggesting that these attributes may promote round goby establishment. The authors’ results indicate that round goby are widespread in eastern Michigan tributaries to the Great Lakes, present in streams with a range of physical habitat characteristics, and that this presence is associated with certain fish species. Mottled sculpin, cyprinids, brook stickleback, white sucker and rainbow trout were associated with goby absence while centrarchids, percids, yellow bullhead, and mud minnow were associated round goby presence. The category also features an article analyzing the 3-D lithospheric structure and regional/residual Bouguer anomalies in the ArabiaEurasia collision (Iran). The authors’ results indicate that Moho depth varies from 42 km at the MesopotamianPersian Gulf foreland basin to 6 km below the High Zagros. The lithosphere is thicker beneath the foreland basin (2 km) and thinner underneath the High Zagros and Central Iran (14 km).
