ScienceAlerts.com Back Online: Agriculture, Biology, Environment, Forestry, Geography and Health

Bangkok, Thailand (PRWEB) April 23, 2012

ScienceAlerts.com is a natural sciences social network to discover and share scholarly content in in the basic and applied sciences of agriculture, biology, environment, forestry, geography and health. Up to now, 76,018 members have signed up and actively contribute this content. The review process is partly automated and partly manual to ensure that only relevant content will be approved and featured on the site. Since new science content is discovered in real-time, the delay between original publication and appearance at ScienceAlerts.com is usually within minutes.

ScienceAlerts.com’s Agricultural Sciences Category covers the cultivation and production of crops, raising of livestock, and postharvest processing of natural products. It currently contains 36,667 stories partly derived from over 220 scholarly agriculture journals. The latest article covers volatiles to protect brassicaceous crops against the cabbage root fly, Delia radicum. The author’s results confirmed the role of dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) in reducing D. radicum egg numbers on broccoli plants and revealed that (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate, a green leaf volatile released by recently damaged plants, strongly stimulated fly oviposition.

ScienceAlerts.com’s Biological Sciences Category covers life and living organisms, including their structure, function, growth, origin, genetics, and distribution. This category currently contains over 85,008 stories partly derived from over 400 scholarly biology journals. The latest article covers development of sandwich enzyme linked immunosorbant assay for the detection of Cronobacter muytjensii. It demonstrates that the developed method was able to detect all the strains of C. muytjensii and that ELISA technique has potent application for the rapid and accurate detection of C. muytjensii in dietary foods.

ScienceAlerts.com’s Environmental Sciences Category covers the external physical conditions affecting growth, development, and survival of organisms, and their management. It currently contains 157,518 stories partly derived from almost 780 scholarly environment journals. The latest article presents potential contaminant pathways from hydraulically fractured shale to aquifers. The rapid expansion of hydraulic fracturing requires that monitoring systems be employed to track the movement of contaminants and that gas wells have a reasonable offset from faults.

ScienceAlerts.com’s Forestry Sciences Category covers the cultivation, maintenance, and development of forests. This category currently contains over 28,000 stories partly derived from 170 scholarly forestry journals. The latest article attempts to model spatial patterns of fire occurrence in Mediterranean Europe using Multiple Regression and Random Forest. The Random Forest model showed a higher predictive ability than Multiple Linear Regression. Furthermore, the analysis of the residuals also indicated a better performance of the Random Forest model, indicating that this method has potentiality to be applied in the assessment of fire-related phenomena at a broad scale.

ScienceAlerts.com’s Geographical Sciences Category covers the physical characteristics of the earth including its surface features, and the distribution of life on earth. It currently contains over 36,700 stories partly derived from almost 250 scholarly geography journals. The latest article covers ostracod palaeoecology and environmental change in the Laptev and Kara seas (Siberian Arctic) during the last 18,000 years. The study suggests that euryhaline species are largely sea-ice- and/or iceberg-rafted and may therefore provide evidence for a climate cooling trend.

ScienceAlerts.com’s Health Sciences Category covers the effects of disease and medical treatment on the overall condition of organisms. It currently contains over 14,100 stories partly derived from nearly 150 scholarly health journals. The latest article shows that healthier home food preparation methods and youth and caregiver psychosocial factors are associated with lower body mass index (BMI) in African American youth. In this study, adolescent children of caregivers who used healthier cooking methods were more likely to use healthy cooking methods themselves.

Bad Honnef, Germany (PRWEB) August 02, 2012

ScienceAlerts.com is an Geography Sciences Social Network to discover and share scholarly content in in the basic and applied sciences of agriculture, biology, environment, forestry, geography and health. Up to now, 20,951 members have signed up and have actively contributed 963,157 posts to the site. The latest additions to the site are aggregated on the frontpage as well as in a ScienceAlerts RSS Feed. The new Geography Sciences category currently features 66,773 stories exclusively selected from 424 scientific geography publishing sources.

ScienceAlerts.com’s Geography Sciences Category covers the physical characteristics of the earth including its surface features, and the distribution of life on earth. It currently contains 66,773 stories selected from 424 scholarly geography sciences journals. This category also provides a Geography Sciences RSS feed which is one of the best and most popular ways of staying up to date with the latest news in this science discipline. One of the latest articles incorporates spatial dynamics and temporal dependency in land use change models. It formulates an empirical discrete land use model within a spatially explicit economic structural framework for land use change decisions, using the City of Austin parcel-level land use database. The estimation results indicate that proximity to highways and other roadways, distance from floodplains, parcel location in the context of existing development, and distance from schools are important determinants of land use. The authors suggest that major highways may not only physically partition regions, but may also act as social barriers for didactic interactions among individuals. Another newly included article investigates factors governing the distribution and fish-community associations of the round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) in Michigan tributaries of the Laurentian Great Lakes. Round goby sites were larger, had lower channel slopes, less large wood, and less canopy cover than round non-gobyt sites, suggesting that these attributes may promote round goby establishment. The authors’ results indicate that round goby are widespread in eastern Michigan tributaries to the Great Lakes, present in streams with a range of physical habitat characteristics, and that this presence is associated with certain fish species. Mottled sculpin, cyprinids, brook stickleback, white sucker and rainbow trout were associated with goby absence while centrarchids, percids, yellow bullhead, and mud minnow were associated round goby presence. The category also features an article analyzing the 3-D lithospheric structure and regional/residual Bouguer anomalies in the ArabiaEurasia collision (Iran). The authors’ results indicate that Moho depth varies from 42 km at the MesopotamianPersian Gulf foreland basin to 6 km below the High Zagros. The lithosphere is thicker beneath the foreland basin (2 km) and thinner underneath the High Zagros and Central Iran (14 km).
