Those customers who had no other backups than the ones on Distribute IT have now lost their sites entirely and will have to rebuild them from scratch. Why Distribute IT had no offsite backups or disaster recovery plan in place is the main question from Computer Networks.

A lot of promises of cheaper prices rely on cutting corners, buyers need to beware that they are not lulled by these fly by night operators, sacrificing the security and viability of their business, customers and data, said Pereira.

Computer Networks have come out to warn businesses and organisations that this kind of hack could happen to anyone; its how prepared and protected you are that will make all the difference.

Buyers will have to ensure they ask the right questions and commercially put caveats in place with their vendors to manage this risk. You should ask your potential supplier, what is the quality of the equipment that your outsourced environment will run on? What security protocols are in place to protect my data? Do you have a disaster recovery plan? What is it? How do you ensure that my security is water tight? said Pereira.

CN considers data as one of the most important assets for any organisation and recommends that organisations be more vigilant when it comes to the security of their own data and ask their suppliers what disaster recovery systems they have in place.
