Horizon, with more than 50,000 square feet of data center space in Dallas, will use the AboveNet private fiber connectivity to expand its services into its new second location, while adding product offerings and delivering on demanding service level agreements.

AboveNet’s solution is delivered over buried fiber optic cable. AboveNet is able to offer high-bandwidth solutions using a portfolio of services that can be custom designed to meet specific data center and customer requirements. AboveNet’s solutions are designed to provide very low latency, with the bandwidth capacity to flexibly scale as needed.

Horizon Data Center Solutions Launches Secure Cloud Computing Platform Called FlexSafe Cloud, Expanding their Infrastructure as a Service Business

Dallas, Texas (PRWEB) September 14, 2009

Horizon Data Center Solutions, a leading data center and IT flexsourcing firm serving businesses and government agencies with colocation, disaster recovery and managed IT services, has launched its cloud computing solution, called FlexSafe Cloud.

FlexSafe Cloud is a private, secure approach to cloud computing that meets the needs of organizations that want the flexibility, scalability and cost savings of virtualization, but that also require the security of a private computing platform.

FlexSafe Cloud is part of Horizon’s strategy to fill a gap in the marketplace by providing flexible, full-service IT outsourcing options that can serve the enterprise client as well as small and medium sized businesses. The company pioneered the concept with its DCFlexSpace colocation model and has continued to expand available IT services to meet client demand.

Horizon says the FlexSafe Cloud delivers immediate benefits for Software as a Service (SaaS) companies, e-commerce businesses with applications that experience fluctuating transaction volumes, financial firms, government agencies, and other entities that want the greater efficiencies and cost savings of virtualization without giving up security.

Chuck Smith, Executive Vice President with Horizon and the company’s Chief Marketing Officer, says that, while the industry debates the actual definition of cloud computing, Horizon has adopted the NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) working definition, with its key characteristics of on-demand self-service, ubiquitous network access, ability to rapidly scale resources and pay on a measured-usage basis.

“Our growing list of federal clients made it a logical decision to adopt the NIST working definition of the cloud,” says Smith.

Smith says the FlexSafe Cloud is highly scalable and based upon Horizon’s Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) offering. Beginning with Tier III data centers, the Horizon IaaS solution is built on leading edge technology providers like Above Net, Cisco, F5 Networks and HP. The FlexSafe Cloud service is virtualized using VMware, and provides the High Availability (HA) performance and security levels required by enterprise data center customers. HDCS currently has two DFW area data centers, providing fast, reliable data backup and replication solutions.

“We believe that the large public cloud providers like Amazon and Google have done an excellent job of supporting the testing and development world, so there’s no need for us to pursue the public cloud. For government and enterprise clients, private clouds are where we can add significant value,” Smith says. The company will also offer community cloud solutions for entities with multiple businesses.

Horizon CEO, Lance A. Smith adds, “Our current clients appreciate our highly secure, reliable data center infrastructure and have asked us to provide this service. We are pleased to extend our relationships with them, while at the same time offering an option that represents our continued charge to fill the gap in the IT outsourcing market between the very large, global IT outsourcing companies and traditional hosting companies. With the FlexSafe Cloud option, the latest development in our fast-paced growth strategy, Horizon continues to be among the leaders in the data center market.”

KDSA Offers New Data Center Model For Hosted Services

North Andover, Mass. (PRWEB) October 1, 2009

KDSA Data Center Services, LLC (http://www.kdsadatacenter.com) has announced that it now offers vaulted internet backup, co-location and application hosting services at multiple Tier 1 data centers in Massachusetts. As a result, KDSA can provide security, reliability and redundancy for mission-critical applications, such as email, and data to customers in a wide range of industries.

While other companies offer co-location services, KDSA’s model is unique in the industry. KDSA will help support and manage your co-located equipment. Additionally, many data centers will generally not lease less than half a cabinet to a company, which makes the cost of using the center cost-prohibitive to smaller companies. Conversely, KDSA will allow companies to lease only the space they need – as little as the space to accommodate a single server. Economically, this puts the co-location concept well within reach of most small and mid-sized companies.

The concept of utilizing an off-site data center is not a new one. For a single monthly fee, customers get a well-protected, redundant location for critical servers and applications with minimal downtime. KDSA’s hosted option, however, takes the data center concept one important step further. In fact, according to Dawn Mortimer, principal and co-founder of KDSA Data Center Services, LLC, the creation of the new data center hosting services was a natural outgrowth of the traditional co-located center.

“We saw a need in smaller to mid-size companies that couldn’t afford their own equipment and that really needed the benefits associated with being located in a data center, specifically high availability and redundancy,” said Mortimer, who also serves as principal of KDSA Consulting, LLC (http://www.kdsaconsulting.com).

KDSA is offering a “soup-to-nuts” solution. The company not only provides the necessary space, but all the bandwidth, power, networking, servers, and storage equipment. In doing so, KDSA can save companies the capital expense of building and outfitting their own on-site server rooms. Ultimately, the new, highly scalable center is ideal for small and medium-sized businesses, for which the cost of building and maintaining their own server room or replacing aging equipment would be prohibitive.

“The connection between the hosted equipment and customer’s own on-site equipment is seamless,” said Mortimer. “Essentially, we are maintaining each customer’s existing network over a long cable. It’s a fully integrated, auditable solution that allows our customers to stretch out their on-site services. And we can maintain all compliance and security protocols.”

The center will prove especially attractive to companies with multiple sites, those that centrally store all of their equipment and confidential information in a single corporate facility; for these companies, a disaster at the corporate facility might cause disruption of IT services at all of the company’s remote sites. In fact, diesel generators at the data center begin operating in the event of a service interruption. As a result of this and other preventive measures, KDSA boasts a service uptime of over 99%.

Combined with KDSA’s disaster recovery capabilities, mission-critical data and applications can be effectively protected, ensuring business continuity. What’s more, clients can opt for a variety of additional managed services, including online backup, e-mail archiving, spam filtering, firewall management, and disaster recovery.

No Limits Software Announces Integration of the Full Line of Eaton Rack PDUs with Their RaMP Data Center Management (DCIM) Solution

St. Louis, MO (PRWEB) March 12, 2012

No Limits Software announces integration of the full line of Eaton rack power distribution units (PDUs) with their RaMP data center management solution.

Eaton offers a full line of rack PDUs with network connectivity designed to provide enterprise class distribution, monitoring and control for a data center. The rack PDU is the last link in the power chain, which makes it a strategic point to monitor power usage of the IT load for calculating power usage effectiveness (PUE). Eaton rack PDUs offer the capability to measure outlet-level power usage and report that information to a DCIM software solution.

“Data center managers are increasingly concerned with measuring and reducing power consumption,” said Joe Skorjanec, ePDU product manager, Eaton Distributed Power Solutions. “In addition to providing analytics to maximize capacity and efficiency, No Limits Softwares integration of Eaton PDUs with its RaMP solution adds a visual depiction of power at the rack and data center level.”

Its important for RaMP to be a vendor-neutral management platform for the data center, said Dave Cole, President of No Limits Software. We enjoy working with companies like Eaton because the quality of their products is well known in the industry.

The RaMP DCIM solution provides the following benefits:

Auto-discovery of detailed device information
Power and environmental monitoring down to the device level
Server monitoring to identify servers which should be retired, virtualized or consolidated
Software and operating system license management
Automated change control to reduce MTTR and increase availability
Web services API provides integration with other systems
PUE, DCiE and CADE energy management calculations
More accurate capacity planning data helps to reduce stranded power and shutdown risks
Device type roll-up views provide an easy way to quickly compare device performance
Enhanced rack views (device type, status, power usage, front and rear temperature
Tracking and alerting on data center tasks
Calculation of power usage at the rack PDU level without requiring an intelligent rack PDU
Enhanced visual data center editor makes it easy to design and edit the data center layout

CAPS Shelton CT Data Center and Work Recovery Facility Successfully Completes SAS 70 Type II 2010 Audit

Shelton, CT (PRWEB) June 23, 2010

Computer Alternative Processing Sites (CAPS), Inc., a leading provider of first class total IT solutions for small and medium businesses (SMB) and enterprise organizations, today announced the successful completion of its 2010 service auditors review, commonly known as a SAS 70 audit, of its General Controls Supporting the Remote Backup and Recovery Hosting Solutions, by a nationally recognized independent auditing firm.

This is part of CAPS continued commitment to maintaining a high level of internal control. CAPS management understands the ever increasing importance of corporate governance, as well as the relationship between the IT services offered by CAPS and our clients internal controls. The 2010 SAS 70 Type II audit is part of an ongoing audit agreement, begun in 2009 with its service auditor, guaranteeing that CAPS secure Shelton, Connecticut facility will undergo an annual Type II audit.

SAS 70 is an acronym for the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) Statement on Auditing Standard (SAS) No. 70, titled Reports on the Processing of Transactions by Service Organizations. SAS No. 70 defines the professional standards used by a service auditor to assess the internal controls of a service organization and issue a service auditors report.

In order to complete the audit, CAPS management developed control objectives for the significant areas of internal control that support the General Controls Supporting the Remote Backup and Recovery Hosting Solutions. The control objectives in the Year report addressed each of the following areas:

Physical Security
Environmental Protection
Network Monitoring, Problem Escalation and Support
Data Communications
Client Setup
CAPS service auditor performed extensive testing of the control activities that have been implemented by CAPS to help ensure that our control objectives are met.

CAPS management recognizes that Sarbanes-Oxley legislation has placed an increased focus on the internal controls of valued business partners. The SAS 70 audit report is designed to provide clients with a certain level of assurance regarding the controls that are maintained by CAPS management.

The SAS 70 report addresses all five components of internal control outlined in the Sarbanes-Oxley legislation, namely the control environment, risk assessment activities, control activities, information and communication systems, and monitoring activities. The reports structure is intuitive; its design enables it to be incorporated well with clients Sarbanes-Oxley compliance programs.

Our dedication to our clients is best illustrated by CAPS commitment to an ongoing SAS 70 Type II audit plan. CAPS is an integral part of their team. Therefore, it is imperative that we insure that they can fully rely on our fluency in compliance regulations and that CAPS systems meet and / or exceed our clients internal governance needs, said Peter J. Oak Brook, IL (PRWEB) July 14, 2010

The expanded facility, Latisys CH2, will now provide customers in the Chicago metro area and surrounding Midwest markets with approximately 136,000 gross square feet of space.

The expanded facility is tied directly to existing fiber carriers in the building, will be monitored 24x7x365 by on-site NOC personnel and systems, and will be operated under SAS70 Type II procedures. The expansion space comes equipped with 32,000 square feet of immediately available, raised floor datacenter space, as well as an initial 5 MW of utility power and 1.2 MW of generator power which will be upgraded in early 2011.

National Trust for Historic Preservation to Select InfoRelay for Data Center and Connectivity Requirements

Washington, DC (Vocus) August 10, 2010

The National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP) has signed an agreement with InfoRelay Online Systems, Inc. to provide it with secure data center space, bandwidth, and IP connectivity to its headquarters located in downtown Washington, DC..

NTHP, a not-for-profit membership organization, faced unique challenges with its legacy data center, which was originally built to support legacy systems that were very large in size. NTHP’s legacy data center lacked fire suppression, diesel generators, and other redundant systems to ensure adequate cooling, connectivity, and safety.

Our room had been sized for the old days (large – before virtual servers). The core of the room was now simply two racks filled with virtual servers and a SAN and lots of extra space to cool. The space housing our racks was in the basement near a water main, both its legacy AC systems were failing, it had no fire suppression, and no backup generator. We started the design of new space in another part of the building, but the costs of relocation became prohibitive especially considering we were just looking to support two dense racks of equipment , said Michael Corcoran, the Director of Information Technology for the National Trust.

InfoRelay, a company that provides custom IP connectivity, disaster recovery, and secure server colocation solutions developed a unique solution that would meet NTHP’s technical requirements while remaining withing the budget allocated to their project. Mr. Corcoran commented: We had worked with InfoRelay for about a year (to support our DR equipment) and have been pleased with their service. Once we presented the issue to our InfoRelay Sales Engineer, we found a way to bring Gigabit Ethernet to the location. We then realized that all the resources we would have had to pay so much for were part of the services InfoRelay offers. Their Reston location is easy for us to get to and far enough from the downtown DC core to be a more secure location for our production environment. Their pricing was aggressive and very reasonable.

According to InfoRelay, the project is going to take approximately 120 days to fully build out, but it will consist of providing dark fiber from Massachusetts Avenue in Washington D.C. back to the InfoRelay data center environment located in Reston, Virginia, a well known technology corridor which is home to many Fortune 100 and 500 companies. By lighting the dark fiber at 1Gbps (1,000 Megabits per second), NTHP was able to not only improve their local IP connectivity (Internet bandwidth), but is able to effectively ensure that internal servers still appear local to its offices, despite being housed remotely. Custom-engineered gigabit Ethernet between NTHP’s headquarters and the InfoRelay data center make this possible. Not only will NTHP be able to utilize a full 100Mbps of IP connectivity locally at their Northern Virginia environment to the outside world, they will be able to reach speeds of 100Mbps at their Headquarters, AND still have enough capacity on their dark fiber to handle all of their internal applications between the two sites. It’s a win-win situation. stated Joseph Vajda, a senior network engineer with InfoRelay.

Custom Storage Partners with Elliptical Mobile Solutions to Deliver Micro-Modular Data Center Solutions

Scottsdale, AZ (PRWEB) August 13, 2010

Custom Storage, a leading provider of data storage solutions that protect and manage organizations mission-critical data, today announced a strategic relationship with Elliptical Mobile Solutions (EMS) to deliver its cost-effective, energy efficient and flexible data centers to Custom Storage clients.

EMS is the only company in the world that delivers Micro-Modular Data Centers at the rack level with onboard cooling, security and fire suppression. Beyond the Data Center: Emerson Network Power Survey Reveals Top IT Concerns Inside Hospitals in North America

Columbus, OH (PRWEB) November 3, 2010

Emerson Network Power, a business of Emerson and the global leader in enabling Business-Critical Continuity, today announced results of its 2010 survey on IT and facility issues inside the hospital. The survey results, which include responses from North America-based professionals in IT management/IT operations, data center management and facilities management, reported budget, power requirements and availability as top concerns.

Other notable results from the survey included:

More than half of respondents upgraded their healthcare facility’s power and cooling infrastructure when implementing new technologies like Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP)/network communications and picture archiving and communication systems (PACS), showing a correlation between the importance of power and cooling infrastructure and the reliance on IT systems.
More than one-half of patient rooms are not supported by any uninterruptible power source, and just 28 percent of operating rooms have emergency power receptacles serviced through an uninterruptible power supply (UPS). This lack of protection makes critical patient data vulnerable to downtime as there is no ride-through until the hospital’s emergency generators can assume the critical load.
Thirty-two percent of those surveyed had experienced unplanned downtime of their IT systems while 29 percent responded that their data centers did not deploy redundant power systems or didn’t know what type of distribution strategy was being used. This suggests that, despite an increased reliance on IT, there is a need for increasing awareness of infrastructure technologies and strategies.
Despite the recession, 60 percent indicated they plan to add more server and storage capacity in their hospital data centers in the next 24 months, while more than half are planning to update or expand IT infrastructure within an existing hospital. Twenty-seven percent plan to expand the existing hospital, while 15 percent plan to build a new facility.
Regarding cloud computing in the healthcare setting, web servers and web-based applications have the second highest cloud adoption rate at 49 percent (13 percent is specified as internal cloud), among respondents, and 50 percent of respondents plan to implement disaster recovery/backup-as-a-service on an internal or external cloud. Forty-nine percent of respondents mentioned a concern with security and cloud computing.

Quotes attributable to Jeff Sturgeon, vice president of marketing and solutions, Emerson Network Power’s Liebert products business in North America:

“With shrinking IT budgets and rising demand for computing capacity, it’s not surprising that healthcare IT and facilities professionals cited budget, power requirements and availability as top concerns inside the hospital.”
“Although it is a relief to know that those in the healthcare industry recognize the relationship between power and cooling infrastructure and IT system availability, the lack of hospital-wide power protection in the OR and patient rooms is concerning.”
“Patient records in the data center may remain available and protected during a utility outage, but without extending protection into the hospital, medical personnel will not have access to vital data while hospital-based IT devices are temporarily down.”
