VoiceNations 2010 Survey Reveals the Demand for Business Continuity Planning

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) February 25, 2010

VoiceNation, the countrys leading provider of voicemail, virtual PBX and disaster recovery solutions, informs the business world of recent survey results conducted on thousands of small to medium sized companies regarding their business continuity plan for voice communication. Their results confirmed a dramatic absence in disaster recovery preparation.

VoiceNation conducted a survey on over 10,000 companies across the US, in industries including manufacturing, shipping, electronics, general contracting, real estate and more. The survey found that while 100% of companies agreed that there was a critical need for some sort of emergency plan if they lost their voice communication platform; only 38% of these businesses actually had some sort of plan in place.

Key findings of the survey included:

Kroll Ontrack Survey Uncovers the Most Common Causes of Data Loss

Epsom, UK (PRWEB) July 23, 2010

According to a recent global survey on the causes of data loss, Kroll Ontrack, the leading provider of data recovery, information management and legal technology products and services, found 40% of home, business, government and channel users of information technology believe human error is the leading cause of data loss, up from 11% in 2005. While hardware and software errors still account for a significant amount of believed failures, this result illustrates the perceived complexity associated with implementing and maintaining today’s storage technology.

Kroll Ontrack asked more than 2,000 participants from 17 countries across North America, Europe and Asia Pacific to explain the cause of their most recent data loss, and a staggering 40% of respondents believed that human error was a leading cause, even though only 27% said they could actually attribute a recent loss to human error. A further 29% identified hardware/system failure as the cause of their most recent data loss, which was reported as the cause of data loss by 56% of respondents in a similar survey in 2005. Despite the reported decline in hardware/system failures, UK Ontrack Data Recovery engineers have seen consistent percentages in hardware failures over the past five years.

Data loss attributed to computer viruses and natural disasters remained fairly low. In the 2010 survey, computer viruses accounted for less than 7% of recent data loss incidents, compared to 4% in 2005. Similarly, natural disasters were responsible for 3% of incidents in 2010, versus 2% in 2005.

“While technology and technology aptitude continue to improve year over year, the reality is that hardware failures, as well as human errors, continue to be factors,” said Robert Winter, chief engineer, Ontrack Data Recovery, Kroll Ontrack. “No one factor can ever truly be overcome, making data loss a reality. Consequently, it is not a matter of if, but rather a matter of when. As a result, businesses and home users alike cannot rely on hope as their strategy. Instead, they must take proactive measures to ensure the individuals operating the storage system have current training, working redundancies and a continuity plan that is current and accessible in the event of a loss.”

Surprisingly, while more than 90% of those surveyed have lost information, 18% “did not know” how their data loss occurred. This demonstrates an urgent need to educate businesses and consumers broadly on data recovery causes, protection tools and strategies, as well as the recovery protocol in the event of a data loss, ensuring further damage is not caused.

“Ultimately, we want to help users avoid the upset and frustration that can be felt as a result of data loss, especially if it involves the loss of personal data, as experienced by 63% of those we surveyed in the UK,” said Phil Bridge, managing director, Kroll Ontrack UK. “Data loss is stressful regardless of whether it’s a home user whose data has been corrupted by a virus or a business that accidentally deletes critical files, volumes, virtual machines or a SAN LUN and there is no backup – or worse, the backup is redundant or corrupt. Kroll Ontrack is available around the clock to remedy virtually any data loss. With unmatched experts performing virtually any type of recovery, Ontrack Data Recovery can prioritise the recovery strategy according to the most critical needs of the customer and locate specific information on used areas of the drive as well as specified file types.”

Beyond the Data Center: Emerson Network Power Survey Reveals Top IT Concerns Inside Hospitals in North America

Columbus, OH (PRWEB) November 3, 2010

Emerson Network Power, a business of Emerson and the global leader in enabling Business-Critical Continuity, today announced results of its 2010 survey on IT and facility issues inside the hospital. The survey results, which include responses from North America-based professionals in IT management/IT operations, data center management and facilities management, reported budget, power requirements and availability as top concerns.

Other notable results from the survey included:

More than half of respondents upgraded their healthcare facility’s power and cooling infrastructure when implementing new technologies like Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP)/network communications and picture archiving and communication systems (PACS), showing a correlation between the importance of power and cooling infrastructure and the reliance on IT systems.
More than one-half of patient rooms are not supported by any uninterruptible power source, and just 28 percent of operating rooms have emergency power receptacles serviced through an uninterruptible power supply (UPS). This lack of protection makes critical patient data vulnerable to downtime as there is no ride-through until the hospital’s emergency generators can assume the critical load.
Thirty-two percent of those surveyed had experienced unplanned downtime of their IT systems while 29 percent responded that their data centers did not deploy redundant power systems or didn’t know what type of distribution strategy was being used. This suggests that, despite an increased reliance on IT, there is a need for increasing awareness of infrastructure technologies and strategies.
Despite the recession, 60 percent indicated they plan to add more server and storage capacity in their hospital data centers in the next 24 months, while more than half are planning to update or expand IT infrastructure within an existing hospital. Twenty-seven percent plan to expand the existing hospital, while 15 percent plan to build a new facility.
Regarding cloud computing in the healthcare setting, web servers and web-based applications have the second highest cloud adoption rate at 49 percent (13 percent is specified as internal cloud), among respondents, and 50 percent of respondents plan to implement disaster recovery/backup-as-a-service on an internal or external cloud. Forty-nine percent of respondents mentioned a concern with security and cloud computing.

Quotes attributable to Jeff Sturgeon, vice president of marketing and solutions, Emerson Network Power’s Liebert products business in North America:

“With shrinking IT budgets and rising demand for computing capacity, it’s not surprising that healthcare IT and facilities professionals cited budget, power requirements and availability as top concerns inside the hospital.”
“Although it is a relief to know that those in the healthcare industry recognize the relationship between power and cooling infrastructure and IT system availability, the lack of hospital-wide power protection in the OR and patient rooms is concerning.”
“Patient records in the data center may remain available and protected during a utility outage, but without extending protection into the hospital, medical personnel will not have access to vital data while hospital-based IT devices are temporarily down.”

Industry Survey Cites Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity as Key Drivers for Backup

New York, NY (PRWEB) February 23, 2011

Backup My Info! (BUMI), a premium provider of managed online backup and recovery solutions for small to mid-sized businesses, today announced the findings of its Q4 2010 industry survey, which established that disaster recovery and business continuity are primary reasons organizations backup their critical data. Despite these key drivers, the survey found that only 55% of respondents are confident that their data will be restored completely within hours of a disaster. BUMI also created an infographic of the survey’s results, which highlights the most intriguing findings.

According to the results of the survey, more than 37% of respondents believe the cost of downtime is “thousands of dollars per hour.” This reinforces the need for all organizations to have a fully managed backup service in place. Survey results also revealed that online data backup (65%) is the most popular way that respondents are backing up their information, while internal appliances (34%) and tape backups (29%) are the next most common ways.

“Today, almost every business relies on a collection of critical data that is growing every day,” said Jennifer Walzer, CEO at Backup My Info!, Inc. “As the amount of data residing on servers, desktops and laptops expands, businesses must think about recovery first, and then develop a strategy to ensure their most critical data is in the best position to be restored. Doing so will protect these assets, keep costs under control, and ensure a fast recovery time.”

Survey Highlights:

Disaster recovery and business continuity are key drivers. Disaster recovery (89%), business continuity (73%) and security (52%) were the most common reasons to backup a company’s critical data.
Cost of downtime varies. Forty-seven percent of respondents agree that the cost of downtime is “hundreds of dollars per hour,” while 37% say it costs “thousands of dollars per hour.”
Comparing recovery time for critical data versus non-critical data. Most organizations (40%) believe that “within four hours” is an acceptable recovery window (the time it takes for your recovered data to be accessible) for critical data. However, in terms of non-critical data, the majority (42%) believe that one business day is an acceptable timeframe.
Not every organization checks the status of its backup process on a daily basis. Only 52% of respondents check their backup process on a daily basis. Fourteen percent of respondents say they check on a weekly basis, while 9% say they never check.
Technical service and support is more important than price when selecting a backup vendor. Seventy-nine percent of respondents believe that technical service and support are more important than price (60%) when selecting a backup vendor. Data security (72%) and speed of recovery (61%) also scored high as important decision criteria.
Data that is important to backup varies from organization to organization. Database files (83%) were the most important information that needs to be backed up, according to respondents. Financial data (79%), email (73%), and productivity applications (52%) also scored high. Video files (19%) were the least important data to be backed up, based on the options given.

BUMI Recommendations:

Backup your business-critical data to a secure location, and ensure that the data is properly backed up and stored offsite.
Run disaster recovery test drills on a regular basis – make certain you can recover the necessary data in the event of a disaster to the designated alternate location.
Prioritize all of your applications/systems to ensure that your recovery plan restores your most critical data first.
Document your disaster recovery plan and make sure it is accessible in case of any disaster.
Invest in an online data backup and recovery solution that includes a simple pricing structure, no additional costs for restores or support, and proactive monitoring of all data backup processes by senior level engineers.
Data backup is not a “set and forget” operation – it needs to be continuously monitored by experts who know your environment and know how to restore your applications/data properly.

The survey was conducted during the fourth quarter of 2010 and is based on responses from 117 business owners, CEOs and IT professionals at small to medium sized businesses. Industries represented include financial services firms, insurance companies, technology firms, healthcare organizations and many more. A snapshot of the survey results can also be viewed at http://www.backupmyinfo.com/resources.

Latest 2012 Enterprise IT Survey Reveals Less Than 30 Percent of Organizations Believe Existing Tools Can Successfully Manage Cloud Performance Storms

Cupertino, CA (PRWEB) August 22, 2012

Xangati, the recognized leader in tracking performance storms for virtualization and cloud environments, and ZK Research, an IT consulting and research firm, today released findings from a joint survey covering the state of existing enterprise virtualization and cloud deployments, future plans, and the biggest challenges facing organizations in the implementation of these infrastructures. Conducted in July 2012 among more than 300 virtualization and IT admins and managers, the survey reveals alarming concerns about obstacles in assuring cloud performance, with a majority of respondents saying that increased virtualization density is dramatically impacting their ability to manage these evolving data centers.

In a related announcement, Xangati today also introduced new storm-tracking capabilities integrated in its Xangati Management Dashboard (XMD) suite to address these market changes. (See release here.)

As organizations migrate to cloud-based models, performance storms create new challenges for successful deployment, added Alan Robin, CEO of Xangati. The clouds constantly fluctuating environment makes it difficult to identify the instantaneous performance shifts occurring across the infrastructure. As revealed in our survey, organizations are now recognizing the need for advanced tools that can deliver second-by-second cross-silo insights, so that they can move quickly and decisively to capture and resolve the source of the problem.

Cross-Silo Storms Impede Cloud Performance Management

The Xangati/ZK Research survey highlights several key obstacles and concerns in managing cloud performance. Nearly two-thirds of those surveyed indicate that increasing density has made performance management of the cloud more difficult, yet adding to the problem 60 percent state that their existing solutions are unable to provide live insights in identifying and remediating performance problems and only deliver after-the-fact analysis. Further compounding the problem, an even larger 74 percent say that vSphere/vCenter does not deliver the automated performance remediation they expected.

These survey findings are loud and clear, said Zeus Kerravala, founder and principal analyst, ZK Research. A next generation data center needs next generation management tools. IT requires live insight into performance problems to confidently deliver and expand cloud-based data centers.

Other specific findings include:

– A huge 77 percent say theyre concerned about the effect of the clouds self-provisioning model on existing virtualized application performance;

– More than 50 percent of respondents indicate that performance storms in their organizations can take over two hours to identify and last more than a day; and

– One in four of those surveyed state that they have been forced to roll back an application from virtual to physical due to undiagnosed performance storms.

Responding to whats needed and organizations plans for the future, the survey also showed that cloud infrastructures should not be managed as separate islands, with an overwhelming 94 percent of respondents saying that the cloud needs to be managed as a cross-silo endeavor among server, network and storage teams.

Contributing to overall concerns about managing performance storms were respondents perceptions about the unique characteristics of cloud storms as:

– The most difficult problems to track down and resolve (28 percent);

– Transient in nature (20 percent);

– Fly under the radar of existing monitoring solutions (19 percent); and

– Resulting from the moving parts in a virtual environment (12 percent).

Of those surveyed, nearly 75 percent indicate they would budget IT resources toward a solution to resolve cloud performance storms.

Survey Shows Hybrid Models are the Future of the Cloud

The survey also shows that as organizations move to the cloud, hybrid models are being increasingly adopted. Specifically, of the organizations surveyed, 40 percent are either evaluating Microsoft Hyper-V or already have it in production and/or test environments. The survey also revealed the following top three internal drivers for organizations hybrid plans:

– A growing positive perception about Hyper-V being good enough (27 percent);

– VMware licensing/pricing (34 percent); and

– A diversity model approach using different hypervisors for different applications (17 percent).

Methodology

The findings were based on more than 300 online surveys, jointly deployed by Xangati and ZK Research and completed by virtualization and IT admins and managers in July 2012. Respondents were from organizations of varying sizes, with more than 50 percent in companies with one thousand employees or more. Additionally, 75 percent of those surveyed were in organizations with more than 50 percent server virtualization representing a 10 percent increase in server virtualization from Xangatis 2010 server virtualization survey.

San Jose, CA (PRWEB) December 02, 2012 Proformative, the largest and fastest-growing online community and resource for senior level corporate finance, accounting, treasury and related professionals today seeks feedback from its constituency with its second annual Cloud Computing Survey tied with a cloud giveaway. Cloud computing and cloud services have become so prevalent and integral to organizations of all sizes that Proformative is hosting another Cloud Computing Survey to gain even more insight into the topic. Cloud Computing is very easily applied to the accounting and finance departments. Traditional on-premise software used to record, process and report on company business can all be taken to the cloud where it can go beyond the debits and credits to managing people, payroll, commerce, treasury, BI and a whole host of formerly difficult-to-acquire and integrate technologies. One important consideration when taking financial or accounting based systems into the cloud is security and backup. Since this information is very sensitive and valuable to the organization, make sure that you are using well-vetted and established cloud providers, urges John Kogan, CEO of Proformative and a four-time CFO. Most online accounting software has backup and disaster recovery functionality built into the system, with degrees of redundancy and layers of security that are non-replicable by most companies trying to do it themselves. Cloud services benefit not just finance, but operations, marketing, sales, and virtually all functions within the organization. The top five benefits include: 1. Anytime, Anywhere Access From Multiple Devices – Perhaps the biggest advantage of using cloud software and services is the ability to access information from virtually any device, anywhere at any time. This means mobile, tablet, desktop, and any other device that has internet access from your companys HQ, your home office, or any coffee shop, airport and hotspot worldwide. 2. Creating a Global Workforce – By hosting services and software in the cloud, organizations gain access to a global workforce. This means access to services and talent is no longer restricted by geography. 3. More Flexible Work Environment – Cloud services and software allow you to make changes in personnel and technology much more quickly and efficiently to fit the needs of your business in real-time. 4. Cloud Computing Is Green – Many companies agree that adopting cloud services and software has helped to reduce their footprint and waste by allowing consolidated and efficient cloud providers to thrive. 5. Cost Savings – Cloud computing services allow organizations to only pay for resources as they use them, without needing to build redundant infrastructure or hiring IT staff to maintain under-utilized systems, creating significant cost savings.
