As Hurricane Season Approaches, Businesses Rely on ilands Cloud-Based Disaster Recovery Solution Using Dell EqualLogic SANs

Houston, TX (PRWEB) May 10, 2011

June 1 marks the beginning of hurricane season 2011. The U.S. is projected to have one of the most active hurricane seasons to date and as a result, businesses are enlisting disaster recovery services to protect business-critical data.

iland, a cloud-computing, infrastructure-as-a-service provider, has delivered a cloud-based disaster recovery solution for vehicle remarketing provider Fleet Lease Disposal, Inc. (FLD) using Dell EqualLogic SANs and VMware virtualization. In preparation for the impending hurricane season, FLD recently conducted a second failover test whereby the total time for replication was cut dramatically.

In FLDs test failover process, iland helped the company determine what components were unique to its infrastructure. For example, FLD learned that certain people within the company would need access to certain controls. IT staff also fine-tuned firewall settings within the infrastructure. Streamlining the process was something that had been addressed in the initial test and consequently, promoted an even faster failover in the subsequent test.

The best part about working on the Dell EqualLogic SANs within the iland cloud environment is that we can conduct failover tests without affecting our production environment. Its one less thing we have to worry about, said Santiago Ramirez, CIO of FLD. Customers didnt notice a difference and the entire process took less than 20 minutes. It was a seamless transition.

iland has established a high level of expertise in using Dell EqualLogic in testing and actual environments. FLD was able to save 3 hours and 28 minutes during its first test failover because of ilands ability to quickly bring the replicated environment online32 minutes, instead of the 4 hours it had previously taken. In the subsequent test, cutover time was cut by an additional 12 minutes. In the case of a disaster, FLDs business-critical data could be accessible in less than a half hour. With Dell EqualLogic SANs as the backbone of ilands Continuity Cloud solution, iland and FLD were able to utilize Dell EqualLogics integrated failback feature to quickly synchronize the Continuity Cloud site back to FLDs production site.

We actually didnt need any modifications to the process when we conducted another test. Everything we needed to know, we learned early on. iland had taken the guesswork out of what we needed to do in case of a disaster. It was a simple and efficient process.

Prior to moving its disaster recovery plan to the cloud, FLD used a backup site in New Jersey that housed 15 physical servers. The software replication solution the company used supported Microsoft SQL Server, Exchange and file services only. All other backups were performed manually at corporate and shipped on USB drives to the New Jersey site every two weeks. This process took two days to prepare and then had to be manually configured when it arrived.

FLD is still saving on its IT budget year over year and benefitting from Dell EqualLogic data replication. Current projections indicate that the company will save $ 320,000 over a three year period. This includes a 90% reduction in New Jersey related staff time, $ 30,000 in software costs, $ 40,000 in internet access costs, over 1,470 man hours and over $ 250,000 in hardware costs by avoiding a technology upgrade and shutting down FLDs remote New Jersey office. The company ultimately has complete control over its virtual environment and failovers can be done from anywhere, including a home office.

ilands EqualLogic-based service allows customers who own Dell EqualLogic SANs to replicate their data to any of its six geographically-dispersed clouds in the United States and United Kingdom. Customers can store a copy of their data off-site or contract out for standby cloud compute resources, guaranteed to be available in case of a disaster.

24 Hour Data Recovery Experts Say, Protect Your Data During Tornado Season

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) June 22, 2011

Historically, tornado season spans from April to June and tornadoes commonly hit an area in the U.S. ranging from northwest Texas across Oklahoma and Kansas, known as tornado alley. But, as this year has shown us, tornadoes can hit anywhere and at any time of year.

24 Hour Data Encourages Regular Back Ups to Protect Data During a Disaster

How can you protect data in the event of a tornado or any natural disaster? Perform regular back-ups of data and follow these tips:

1. Maintain three forms of data backup, including at least one remote back-up that can be accessed over the web.

2. Rely on storage in the cloud so you can access data in the event of an emergency anywhere in the world, from any computer with Internet access;

3. Unplug computers during a storm to prevent damage caused by power surges;

4. Keep the phone number for 24 Hour Data handy for emergency data recovery services, in case a computer can’t access files or the Internet to start the data recovery process online.

Tornadoes Harm Hard Drives, Causing a Need for Data Recovery

A hard drive that’s been knocked around and thrown by tornado winds can suffer shock damage. Floods and heavy rains from thunderstorms associated with twisters can also damage hard drives, as can power surges, often caused when power lines experience tornado force winds or direct contact with a twister. In all these cases, it’s possible that data recovery specialists can recover data through complex physical and logical data recovery.

For businesses ravaged by a tornado, recovering lost data can make the difference between staying in business or closing shop forever. For a family that’s lost their home to a tornado, finding family photos on a recovered hard drive provides a link to the past and hope for the future.

Our data recovery specialists aren’t policemen, firefighters or emergency responders who save lives. We owe those people a huge debt of gratitude for their actions during events like the Joplin tornado, says 24 Hour Data President Sean Wade. But our emergency data recovery services give us a small opportunity to be heroes to business owners and individuals who rely on crucial data stored on computers that may now be damaged to the point where do-it-yourself data recovery just won’t work.

24 Hour Data offers 24/7 Emergency Recovery Service and Fair Pricing

A computer, hard drive or server can be a lifeline to recovering some of what people have lost in a natural disaster, Wade adds. We understand this, and that’s why we pride ourselves on offering round-the-clock 24 Hour Data recovery service, and honest price quotes.

In most cases, 24 Hour Data offers a free diagnostic for data recovery within 24 hours of receiving storage media, including hard drive recovery, RAID recovery, SSD recovery, and Mac recovery. Most data recovery services can be accomplished within 48 hours. And if 24 Hour Data can’t recover lost data, there’s no charge for the service.

24 Hour Data has data recovery specialists standing by to offer data recovery services across the U.S. Call us today at 866-598-DATA to find out more.

About 24 Hour Data – 24 Hour Data, based in Dallas, Texas, is an industry leading data recovery firm specializing in logical and physical recovery of hard disk drives, RAID servers, photos, Macs, flash drives, solid state drives, virtual arrays and more. We understand the human side of the data recovery business, and offer round-the-clock service and a fast and honest estimate, along with data recovery within 48 hours, in most cases. Don"t be Complacent About Your Business Continuity Late in the Season

Grand Cayman (PRWEB) October 25, 2011

The recent heavy rain has been a stark reminder that the hurricane season is not over yet. Ignition Ltd., a leader in off-shore IT services, is reminding businesses not to underestimate the importance of having a business continuity strategy in place.

Those of us living in the hurricane belt are well-aware of the potential hazards a storm can bring. For a business, damage to property, paper records, digital data and disruption to overall business activity are very real possibilities. The most likely concerns are water damage and communications failure, both of which are fairly easy to avoid with proper storage and reliable backup procedures.

Sonya Sherman, Ignitions Senior Records Management Consultant says Information is the lifeblood of an organisation and its important to make sure that the information is backed up and secured. Most organisations will have a hurricane plan with strategies in place to protect both people and property. But it is vital that these plans incorporate your information assets. These plans should also be reviewed regularly. Its very easy to become complacent during the good times but keeping on top of your disaster recovery plans is a must.

Building a comprehensive strategy will ensure that information assets are protected. This not only helps minimise the risks and losses associated with a disaster, but will help return a business to normal as quickly as possible. It is human nature to hope for the best, Sonya continues but its good sense to plan for the worst.

Together with looking at protecting information, businesses should also consider how records and critical information systems are stored and backed-up. Backing up data is a necessary process to ensuring business continuity. The traditional approach of physically backing-up data and productions systems to a tape and then storing at a separate location is a risky approach. Data is backed up, but what about applications to run the data? What if the tape was damaged or destroyed?

This is one of the reasons more and more companies are adopting the cloud. With the cloud, companies no longer need to store systems in-house and can in fact remove their own servers altogether. A significant consequence of moving a companys operations to the cloud is that the business will automatically have a disaster recovery and business continuity solution in place. Back-ups of data and applications are made without having to duplicate everything.

With Ignition, data and company specific applications are also copied between multiple data hosting centres. says Graham Pearson, CEO of the Ignition Group. This means that should one centre go down, data and applications will still be available. In reality these data hosting centres are built far more robustly than anybodys own office building with multiple redundancy and back-up systems in place. Whether your business is a small startup or a multi-regional organisation, the benefits of using the cloud as part of your business continuity solution is clear.

Overall, the important thing to remember is not to become complacent about your business continuity plans, especially at the tail end of the hurricane season. Its never too late to look at or review your disaster recovery strategies. Graham concludes.

Ignition offers a fully comprehensive service that helps businesses address their business continuity requirements. From developing a robust information management strategy through to cloud back-up solutions, Ignition has extensive experience building business-specific solutions.
