Industry Survey Cites Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity as Key Drivers for Backup

New York, NY (PRWEB) February 23, 2011

Backup My Info! (BUMI), a premium provider of managed online backup and recovery solutions for small to mid-sized businesses, today announced the findings of its Q4 2010 industry survey, which established that disaster recovery and business continuity are primary reasons organizations backup their critical data. Despite these key drivers, the survey found that only 55% of respondents are confident that their data will be restored completely within hours of a disaster. BUMI also created an infographic of the survey’s results, which highlights the most intriguing findings.

According to the results of the survey, more than 37% of respondents believe the cost of downtime is “thousands of dollars per hour.” This reinforces the need for all organizations to have a fully managed backup service in place. Survey results also revealed that online data backup (65%) is the most popular way that respondents are backing up their information, while internal appliances (34%) and tape backups (29%) are the next most common ways.

“Today, almost every business relies on a collection of critical data that is growing every day,” said Jennifer Walzer, CEO at Backup My Info!, Inc. “As the amount of data residing on servers, desktops and laptops expands, businesses must think about recovery first, and then develop a strategy to ensure their most critical data is in the best position to be restored. Doing so will protect these assets, keep costs under control, and ensure a fast recovery time.”

Survey Highlights:

Disaster recovery and business continuity are key drivers. Disaster recovery (89%), business continuity (73%) and security (52%) were the most common reasons to backup a company’s critical data.
Cost of downtime varies. Forty-seven percent of respondents agree that the cost of downtime is “hundreds of dollars per hour,” while 37% say it costs “thousands of dollars per hour.”
Comparing recovery time for critical data versus non-critical data. Most organizations (40%) believe that “within four hours” is an acceptable recovery window (the time it takes for your recovered data to be accessible) for critical data. However, in terms of non-critical data, the majority (42%) believe that one business day is an acceptable timeframe.
Not every organization checks the status of its backup process on a daily basis. Only 52% of respondents check their backup process on a daily basis. Fourteen percent of respondents say they check on a weekly basis, while 9% say they never check.
Technical service and support is more important than price when selecting a backup vendor. Seventy-nine percent of respondents believe that technical service and support are more important than price (60%) when selecting a backup vendor. Data security (72%) and speed of recovery (61%) also scored high as important decision criteria.
Data that is important to backup varies from organization to organization. Database files (83%) were the most important information that needs to be backed up, according to respondents. Financial data (79%), email (73%), and productivity applications (52%) also scored high. Video files (19%) were the least important data to be backed up, based on the options given.

BUMI Recommendations:

Backup your business-critical data to a secure location, and ensure that the data is properly backed up and stored offsite.
Run disaster recovery test drills on a regular basis – make certain you can recover the necessary data in the event of a disaster to the designated alternate location.
Prioritize all of your applications/systems to ensure that your recovery plan restores your most critical data first.
Document your disaster recovery plan and make sure it is accessible in case of any disaster.
Invest in an online data backup and recovery solution that includes a simple pricing structure, no additional costs for restores or support, and proactive monitoring of all data backup processes by senior level engineers.
Data backup is not a “set and forget” operation – it needs to be continuously monitored by experts who know your environment and know how to restore your applications/data properly.

The survey was conducted during the fourth quarter of 2010 and is based on responses from 117 business owners, CEOs and IT professionals at small to medium sized businesses. Industries represented include financial services firms, insurance companies, technology firms, healthcare organizations and many more. A snapshot of the survey results can also be viewed at http://www.backupmyinfo.com/resources.

DynaSis Opens Secondary Data Center in Phoenix for Redundancy and to Better Serve West Coast Clients

Roswell, GA (PRWEB) February 23, 2011

DynaSis, Atlanta’s premier provider of IT services and support for small and medium businesses (SMBs), announced today the opening of a data center in Phoenix, Arizona. The data center will provide instant failover for clients with our HOT Disaster recovery service. Phoenix will also act as a redundant backup site for our data farms in the Atlanta data center as well as primary support for west coast clients.

“Phoenix is the number one location in the U.S. for the establishment of data centers because of the minimal weather-related interruptions in that market,” states Dave Moorman, president of DynaSis. “The lack of electrical storms, hurricanes and tornadoes is one of the primary reasons we chose to locate our new facility there.”

The Phoenix data center provides a redundant setup for DynaSis’ primary Atlanta data center location. In the case of interruptions due to weather or other acts of God, DynaSis customers served in the Atlanta data center would have their operations transferred to and supported by the Phoenix data center.

“For our customers, the transfer of services would be seamless and virtually undetectable,” explains Moorman.

Like the Atlanta data center, the Phoenix data center provides 24/7/365 secure access via biometrics. Robust power is delivered via four 10 megawatt feeds from the utility substation to the facility along two different geographic paths. DynaSis’ infrastructure is redundantly fed from two power distribution panels (PDBs) on separate distribution paths. A bi-directional closed water loop ensures efficiently pumping of chilled water to our facility from two sides while removing datacenter heat. 36-inch raised floors provide increased capability for air circulation and cooling of equipment than the traditional 24-inch raised floors common in many data centers.

“Continuity of business operations is critical to the livelihood of most firms,” concludes Moorman. “Providing this robust backup data center ensures business continuity for our clients. Our mission is to provide fortune 500 level IT to the SMB. This investment furthers our commitment to that strategy.”

Festo Develops SmartInversion Forward Motion through Inversion

Hauppauge, NY (PRWEB) May 07, 2012

The Festo Bionic Learning Network has introduced a new innovation in automation technology SmartInversion. The mechanical principles of rotation and linear motion are the basis of many solutions in automation. Rotary actuators, servo motors, and pneumatic and electric semi-rotary actuators work on the principle of rotation. Linear axes and parallel grippers are examples of linear motion. Another new form of motion involves the inversion of a body.

With our Future Concepts development work, for example the SmartInversion project, we are constantly seeking out new or relatively unknown motion and drive concepts, said Dr. Heinrich Frontzek, Head of Festo Corporate Communication. Our engineers are working with renowned universities, institutes, and development companies in order to transfer mathematical and scientific principles to industrial applications.

Flying chain with inversion actuator

The SmartInversion Future Concept is a flying object filled with helium, which is similar to a chain and moves forward by inverting itself. The intelligent combination of extremely lightweight design, electric drives and open- and closed-loop control makes endless, rhythmically pulsating inversion in the air possible.

This endless, rhythmically pulsating motion is called inversion and lends the flying model its name. The flying object derives its shape from the cubic belt developed by Paul Schatz. With the cubic belt, Schatz discovered that a third basic type of motion, inversion, was possible in addition to rotation (rotary motion) and translation (linear motion). The Swiss artist and engineer divided a cube into two star shapes and an invertible cubic belt. The cubic belt is a six-member joint ring, which separates from the two interlocking parts at the corners, can be continuously inverted and thus take on different shapes.

This spectacular flying object moves with the aid of a pulsating actuator. The interaction between expansion and contraction in a rhythmic sequence is responsible for the inversion. The helium compensates for the effect of gravity on the chain, thus providing lift for the flying object. Thrust is generated as the object inverts itself and it can thus be described as an inversion actuator.

Condition monitoring ensures adequate safety in flight. Data such as the battery charge and current consumption is recorded and monitored in real time during flight. For Festo, the principle of permanent diagnostics is a guarantee for process reliability in automation technology.

Ideas competition looking for new solutions

Festo has announced an interdisciplinary design competition. The company is looking for a creative idea for a functional application of the inversion for use in industrial environments. In doing so, Festo is setting the pace for innovation in automation technology. This innovative Future Concept symbolises a new type of drive concept. It represents an ideal starting point for encouraging engineers and inspiring the development of future applications.
