Infineta Systems, the first and only provider of WAN optimization systems for Big Traffic workflows, today released the findings of a new research report that examines the intersection of Big Data and the enterprise WAN. Conducted by Infineta in collaboration with Internet Research Group (IRG), an independent analysis and research firm, the report looks in-depth at large organizations leveraging Big Data to make better business decisions, and identifies several emerging trends that are poised to become barriers to the adoption of Big Data technologies. Drawing on real-world customer use cases and extensive customer surveys, the research also validates that the WAN is a critical component of a distributed Big Data strategy and that breakthrough WAN optimization technologies are essential for the enterprise to fully harness the power and promise of Big Data.
Prior to this study, there was very little insight into the ability of existing WAN infrastructure to sustain the runaway growth of Big Data, stated Raj Kanaya, CEO and co-founder of Infineta Systems. Our collaborative research effort with IRG provides solid insights into the intersection of Big Data and the WAN, and how enterprises need to plan for and equip their infrastructure so they see material business benefits of Big Data sooner.
Big Data is the newest driver behind Big Traffic workflows traversing enterprise networks and refers to data sets that are not well suited for traditional storage or analytics systems. An estimated 80-90% of Big Data is comprised of semi- or unstructured data, unlike the structured data found in conventional data sets. In addition, Big Data is characterized by aggregate volumes in the 100s of terabytes to petabytes of distributed data. Indeed, mission-critical data sets are doubling or tripling in size every two years on average, with Gartner forecasting that enterprise data will grow approximately 800% by 2015.
Why Big Data Matters
Big Data heralds enormous change and untapped value for the enterprise, as new technologies emerge to handle Big Data analysis, presentation, management, and distribution. Key drivers behind these technologies include:
