CEO Thomas Aiken will present new research data on battery cell emissions monitoring at the Society for Automotive Engineers (SAE) World Congress, April 25, 2012 in Detroit, Michigan. Aikens presentation will address the question of whether gas emissions from lithium ion cells can be detected rapidly enough to represent a new tool for pack diagnostics and safety. The findings will present OEMs with a solution to support continued development of electric vehicles. SAE attendees will include more than 10,000 international engineers, academics, government officials and others from the automotive engineering sector.

Our goal is to continue supporting future endeavors in automotive technology. To do this, we need to remain a step ahead of our customers to determine what they need to get to the next level. As pioneers in gas sensor technology, this presentation is an opportunity for attendees to gain some insight about the most recent work weve done to ensure lithium ion batteries are a safe, effective solution for electric vehicles, said Aiken.

AppliedSensor tested three types of automotive sensors (volatile organics and hydrogen) under nail penetration, overcharge and short-circuit stress parameters in a controlled test environment. Data concluded that volatile organic compound (VOC) and hydrogen sensors rapidly detect flammable gases emitted from lithium ion cells. Other findings include:

Gas is detected prior to combustion
Sensors withstand high pressure and temperature of combustion

Aiken will be available on the exhibit floor from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. on April 26 for an extended, informal discussion of his presentation. EMCO Software Reports Results of its Latest Enterprise PC Power Management Research

EMCO Software, a leading provider of power management software for networks, has announced results of the corporate power management research conducted by the company among its customers. The research participants included organizations and companies using the latest version of EMCO Remote Shutdown for automation of PC power management across local networks. The purpose of this research was to learn more about the approaches to power management used by companies and to access the efficiency of the employed software power management solutions.

According to the research results, 65% of network administrators and IT professionals reported that they use standard power-saving features provided by the operation systems, such as switching computers into the sleep mode after some time of inactivity. However, only 30% of the administrators using those features believe that they can be effectively used in large network environments.

“The reason why standard power-saving technologies, which are quite effective for personal use, don’t work in corporate environments is that those technologies weren’t designed for corporate usage. It’s hard to manage power profiles on multiple PCs, and chances are high that the centrally configured settings will be changed by users. Under a typical scenario, users change the standard Windows power settings to be able to access their PCs remotely after hours. This can be avoided by using PC Power Management solutions that manage all computers from a central location”, Thorarinn Oskarsson, CEO at EMCO Software, says.

EMCO Software has evaluated the savings achieved by its customers using EMCO Remote Shutdown 5. This shutdown and Wake-on-LAN software allows turning on and off network computers remotely on schedule so as to turn off unused PCs and cut power costs. EMCO customers estimate their savings at about 40% of their previous PC power costs. Roughly, it equals to about 400 kWh per PC per year or $ 40 per PC per year according to the current power prices. The actual savings depend on the company size and are usually higher for large companies having a significant number of PCs. Also, the savings depend on the type of computers used by the company. With desktops, the savings are usually about 20% higher than with laptops, because desktop computers and their monitors consume more power than laptops.

“These results correlate well with the industry standards for PC power management tools. Using these results, companies and organizations can estimate their savings when they consider using a power management solution in their offices. PC power management solutions deliver a fast return on investment with no impact on functionality because they simply save energy that is wasted”, Thorarinn Oskarsson, CEO at EMCO Software, says.

Telehomecare Research Project Launched

ParaMed and CellTrak announce their support for an important new industry research project integrating the University Health Networks (UHN) telemonitoring system with the CellTrak system. This system provides home healthcare nurses with up-to-date client information for visits and timely intervention in case of deteriorating health.

The research will be conducted over the next two years through financial contributions from the National Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Strategic Research Network in Healthcare Support through Information Technology Enhancements (hSITE).

During the first year of the multi-year project, the existing remote client monitoring system will be adapted for use by home healthcare nurses. The second year will be devoted to piloting the resulting system with ParaMed nurses.

ParaMed has deployed the CellTrak system, which provides encrypted transfer of data between the point-of-care and the backend servers. CellTraks patented software-as-a-service solutions run on GPS-enabled mobile devices via a homecare technology platform which automates workflow and reduces cost. In particular, time and attendance, mileage records, travel times, visit times, care plans, and client information can be transferred. CellTrak enables communication between the home healthcare nurses and their local offices. ParaMed home healthcare nurses currently use BlackBerry mobile smart phone devices for CellTrak, which are compatible with an existing UHN telemonitoring system.

The new mobile telemonitoring system for chronic disease management has been developed at the Centre for Global eHealth Innovation, Techna Institute, University Health Network (UHN). The system was designed as a cost-effective tool to enhance client self-care and clinical management for various chronic diseases, including heart failure, hypertension, and diabetes.

Weve shown effectiveness of telemonitoring in acute care and primary care settings, but we are looking at new models of care centered in homecare in this study, says Dr. Joseph Cafazzo, Lead, Centre for Global eHealth Innovation, University Health Network.

Various client parameters (i.e. weight, blood pressure, symptoms, blood glucose, ECG) are sent with the use of wireless medical devices to a BlackBerry mobile phone. The BlackBerry then automatically sends the information to data servers. An appropriate message or instruction is sent back to the client, and necessary alerts are sent to a clinicians mobile phone. The efficacy of the telemonitoring system has been evaluated through randomized controlled trials in clinics and family physician practices, but its application for use by home healthcare nurses has not been explored.

CellTrak eliminates inefficient, error-prone paper-based reporting processes, and provides automated patient specific care plans and visit records. Combined with GPS mileage monitoring and automated visit verification CellTrak automates workflow, improves compliance, reduces costs and helps you improve outcomes at the point of care.
