Government Agencies Seek Tech Solutions That Promote Efficiency, Reduce Costs, New CompTIA Study Finds

Downers Grove, IL (PRWEB) May 17, 2011

Challenged by tight budgets, bureaucratic hurdles and a dramatic rise in cybersecurity attacks, government agencies are looking for technology solutions that help them become more efficient while at the same time reducing costs, according to new research released today by CompTIA, the non-profit association for the information technology (IT) industry.

CompTIAs Second Annual Government IT Purchase Plans study finds that the top influencer driving government IT purchase plans over the next 12 months is a desire to become more efficient and reduce long-term costs. It was identified as an influential or very influential factor in purchase decisions by 60 percent of the government IT decision makers or influencers surveyed.

A significant number of respondents, 54 percent, said the need to comply with a mandate or regulation is a driving factor in IT spending. Other top purchase influencers include responding to the needs of citizens and staff (53 percent); and the need to modernize aging systems (47 percent), especially systems that are vulnerable to security threats due to dated technology.

Though budget challenges and the burden of bureaucracy can slow the pace of change, government technology spending will continue, particularly on solutions that help to ease the challenges of resources and security, said Amy Carrado, director, market research, CompTIA.

But with money to spend increasingly precious, agencies are likely to demand greater returns on their investments and require vendors to clearly prove the effectiveness of their solutions.

Nearly four in ten (39 percent) of federal, state and local government IT decision makers and influencers identified new data backup and recovery solutions as a priority over the next 12 months. Security applications were cited by 37 percent of respondents, followed by virtualization solutions (30 percent) and content management solutions (24 percent). Options such as unified communications and cloud computing (18 percent each) ranked slightly lower on the list.

This may be a signal that government users need further education from their IT providers on how cloud computing and unified communications can effectively address their objectives of greater operational efficiencies, Carrado said.

Among specific products on government shopping lists, desktop PCs (51 percent) and laptop PCs (48 percent) hold the top two spots, according to the CompTIA study. Local government agencies are especially bullish on purchases of new PCs, including tablet PCs.

Other purchase priorities for the next 12 months include servers (37 percent), printers (33 percent), operating systems (32 percent), productivity suites and software (28 percent), network infrastructure (27 percent) and smart phones (23 percent).

Agencies Plan More Training

Nearly half (44 percent) of government IT respondents at the federal, state and local levels plan to implement employee training for both IT staff and end users over the next 12 months

This suggests that even under severe budget constraints, government agencies continue to recognize the importance of a well-trained workforce that understands how to effectively use technology, Carrado said.

Among the training priorities: PC maintenance, help desk and tech support; security; disaster recovery and backup; and networking. Project management, business intelligence and data management and analysis also appear on the training priority list.

Increased interest by government agencies in training is something that technology vendors and solution providers should note, according to Carrado.

Technology providers should consider providing training sessions as a value-add when government organizations purchase a product, or offering mini-tutorials to employees at agencies where there is potential for purchases in the near future, she said.

CompTIAs Second Annual Government IT Purchase Plans study was developed from a survey of 375 federal, state and local IT buyers and influencers. The data was collected during late February 2011.The full report is available at no cost to CompTIA members at http://www.comptia.org or by contacting the research department at research(at)comptia(dot)org.

Dolly Drive Turns to Stand-Up Comics to Promote Computer Backup in New Short Film on DollyDrive.com

New York, NY (PRWEB) April 19, 2012

Dolly Drive, makers of cloud services for Mac users, takes a look at how stand-up comedians create their material and what they do to protect it from getting lost in Saved Bits, a short film by comedian and filmmaker Lenny Marcus.

Dolly Drive makes sure that whatever you are creating on your Mac at any moment, is backed up and available for you in the cloud, anytime, anywhere, forever. said Leigh Kessler, Head of Marketing at Dolly Drive. We wanted to see whether technology had given some of the most creative people in the world stand-up comics the power to make sure that their ideas were never lost.

In the 5-minute short, Marcus interviews top stand-ups in New York in the clubs and on the street, asking them to share some early favorite jokes that got them big laughs, where they write and archive their material, and what would happen if they ever lost it.

Said Kessler, Unlike stand-ups, whose ideas live on pieces of paper and in their heads, people who create content on a computer hope that that machine is safe, and with them, at all times. But we dont live in a one computer world anymore. We collaborate, we move around, and we wear our computers down. Dolly Drives cloud services makes sure that whatever Mac users are creating on their machines is protected and available, whenever, and wherever, they need it.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) cites the importance of cloud backup in their disaster preparedness campaign Resolve to be Ready 2012 at Ready.gov

One of the most important things Dads do for their families is to ensure their safety and protection in any situation. said Anthony Palermo, CEO of Dolly Drive. That includes providing the tools to protect family pictures, documents, videos and virtually every single thing they put on their computers.

We built Dolly Drive with family capabilities so that a single admin could make sure everything under a households virtual roof was synced, stored and backed up in the cloud. Dolly Drive Offers New Customers a Free Account of its Cloud Storage for Mac to Give as Gifts During Holidays in Effort to Promote Data Backup

New York, NY (PRWEB) December 21, 2012

Cirrus Thinking, makers of the award-winning Dolly Drive cloud backup and storage for Mac, have launched a backup awareness campaign over the holidays in an effort to get people who backup their computer to encourage friends and family who dont to get started. Individuals who purchase a Dolly Drive account will receive a free account to send to a friend or family member who isnt doing cloud backup. Invididuals can also send traditional gift accounts to Mac users.

Computer backup is so easy but if you dont start it, you are at risk of losing everything on your hard drive in an instant. said Anthony Palermo, Creator of Dolly Drive. By giving people who want to use Dolly Drive cloud storage & backup a chance to regift their purchase to a friend or family member, we figure we not only give Mac fans a chance to use Dolly, but more importantly, give them the chance to be a hero when their new-to-backup friend finally needs it.

Cloud storage is also becoming more important as more people get used to using multiple computers in their lives as well as smartphone devices. A recent Neilsen report revealed that over 55% of the mobile phone market is now penetrated by smartphones, meaning more and more picture and videos are being uploaded & synced, and more employees are expecting to have access to their work files every minute they are away from their office.

Added Palermo, Computer backup isnt just for techies. Its for everyone who uses a computer and keeps accumulating more and more digital life. At a time, we had one computer that held all of our stuff. Now people have 2 or 3 computers and multiple mobile devices. You not only need to be able to access it regardless of which computer you have, but you need to ensure that those files are safely being archived throughout your day.

In addition to the buy one, get one promotion, Dolly now offers gift cards.

Dolly Drive is an all-in-one sync, store and backup service designed for Mac. In addition to providing Mac users offsite cloud storage and mobile access to expand hard drive space, the application allows users to create a bootable clone of their Mac on an external hard drive for local disaster recovery. Opus Research Issues "5 Tips to Survive the 'BYOD' Era" to Promote Network Quality, Integrity and Security on Enterprise Networks

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) January 07, 2013

Opus Research, the leading IT analyst firm focusing on Conversational Commerce, has just issued a brief report entitled 5 Rules for Survival in the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Era. It is a quick reference guide identifying five major considerations that business enterprises must take into account to maintain network quality, integrity and security while accommodating the onslaught of personal mobile devices. The report is made available on a complimentary basis by Empirix.

BYOD is here to stay for one simple reason, report author Dan Miller, Sr. Analyst at Opus Research, explains. Employees dont think that going to work should be a downgrade from the tools and devices they use at home to get things done.

Recent studies by IT vendors like Cisco show that over 85% of global corporations with more than 1000 employees already offer varying level of support for employees who use their own smartphones, tablets or laptops into the workplace. Their challenge is to provide secure, reliable and capacious access to the companys wireless network. It is a daunting task made necessary by the advent of an even broader variety of intelligent wireless devices, including Ultrabooks, Chromebooks, e-readers and mini tablets.

Employees at all levels expect high-quality communications while working, no matter what the device, connection or application, said Tim Moynihan, Vice President of Marketing at Empirix. Technicians in the IT and Networking departments now must manage tremendous traffic loads with unpredictable usage spikes, all while trying to ensure that important real-time communications such as phone calls, customer chat sessions or video conferences, are kept free from static, echo or delays.

To help IT professionals cope, Opus Research offers Five to Survive and Thrive, meaning 5 rules to help IT organizations prepare for the flood of new devices, applications and traffic levels that come in the wake of the holiday season. It starts with acceptance of the consumerization of IT and preparation of data processing and management resources to detect impending faults and predict usage trends in order to keep the networks working flawlessly.

Employees expect the network to flat out work, Miller notes. Network assurance takes on new meaning when thousands of employees are using dozens of different devices and hundreds of applications to get their work done.

The brief report is made available free of charge by Empirix through its Web site or through Opus Researchs Web site.
