It can be used to supplement existing data center capacity or can be deployed as a standalone, remote data center or disaster recovery site. Unlike other containerized systems, the SmartMod enclosure comes in configurations to support a wide range of capacity needs and accommodates the most common data center densities without sacrificing availability.

The SmartAisle infrastructure can increase efficiency and provide flexibility through row-based infrastructure for new and existing data centers. Through a simplified, modular design, SmartAisle configurations enable IT professionals to reduce equipment costs, optimize the use of existing infrastructure, free up stranded capacity and reduce energy consumption by up to 30 percent.

Government Agencies Seek Tech Solutions That Promote Efficiency, Reduce Costs, New CompTIA Study Finds

Challenged by tight budgets, bureaucratic hurdles and a dramatic rise in cybersecurity attacks, government agencies are looking for technology solutions that help them become more efficient while at the same time reducing costs, according to new research released today by CompTIA, the non-profit association for the information technology (IT) industry.

CompTIAs Second Annual Government IT Purchase Plans study finds that the top influencer driving government IT purchase plans over the next 12 months is a desire to become more efficient and reduce long-term costs. It was identified as an influential or very influential factor in purchase decisions by 60 percent of the government IT decision makers or influencers surveyed.

A significant number of respondents, 54 percent, said the need to comply with a mandate or regulation is a driving factor in IT spending. Other top purchase influencers include responding to the needs of citizens and staff (53 percent); and the need to modernize aging systems (47 percent), especially systems that are vulnerable to security threats due to dated technology.

Though budget challenges and the burden of bureaucracy can slow the pace of change, government technology spending will continue, particularly on solutions that help to ease the challenges of resources and security, said Amy Carrado, director, market research, CompTIA.

But with money to spend increasingly precious, agencies are likely to demand greater returns on their investments and require vendors to clearly prove the effectiveness of their solutions.

Nearly four in ten (39 percent) of federal, state and local government IT decision makers and influencers identified new data backup and recovery solutions as a priority over the next 12 months. Security applications were cited by 37 percent of respondents, followed by virtualization solutions (30 percent) and content management solutions (24 percent). Options such as unified communications and cloud computing (18 percent each) ranked slightly lower on the list.

This may be a signal that government users need further education from their IT providers on how cloud computing and unified communications can effectively address their objectives of greater operational efficiencies, Carrado said.

Among specific products on government shopping lists, desktop PCs (51 percent) and laptop PCs (48 percent) hold the top two spots, according to the CompTIA study. Local government agencies are especially bullish on purchases of new PCs, including tablet PCs.

Other purchase priorities for the next 12 months include servers (37 percent), printers (33 percent), operating systems (32 percent), productivity suites and software (28 percent), network infrastructure (27 percent) and smart phones (23 percent).

Agencies Plan More Training

Nearly half (44 percent) of government IT respondents at the federal, state and local levels plan to implement employee training for both IT staff and end users over the next 12 months

This suggests that even under severe budget constraints, government agencies continue to recognize the importance of a well-trained workforce that understands how to effectively use technology, Carrado said.

Among the training priorities: PC maintenance, help desk and tech support; security; disaster recovery and backup; and networking. Project management, business intelligence and data management and analysis also appear on the training priority list.

Increased interest by government agencies in training is something that technology vendors and solution providers should note, according to Carrado.

Technology providers should consider providing training sessions as a value-add when government organizations purchase a product, or offering mini-tutorials to employees at agencies where there is potential for purchases in the near future, she said.

CompTIAs Second Annual Government IT Purchase Plans study was developed from a survey of 375 federal, state and local IT buyers and influencers. Six administrators in WINIOWSKI Companys IT Department oversee the entire network infrastructure, the data center and over 330 workstations. Efficient IT operations are critical, since all manufacturing processes are digital and the flow of data from the central database drives all operations. Not only are these administrators responsible for day-to-day operations, but they must be able to respond quickly to any failure of the companys computers, storage, servers and network infrastructure.

We have to ensure the highest level of safeguards and uninterrupted availability of the data for our core production systems, which are stored within disk arrays located in the main data center, says Kosecki. We cannot afford downtime or data disruptions that impact daily production; relying on a backup copy made the previous night is not a practical option.

High Availability and High Performance with DataCore

The company enlisted the help of Quad Pro, a solution provider in Krakow, to investigate storage virtualization solutions to improve data reliability and availability. We wanted to avoid downtime in case of failure of a single disk array as well as significantly improve our ability to deal with natural disasters like fire, flooding or building collapse, says Kosecki.

Over a month-long test period, using actual production data in a set of servers provided by Quad Pro, it became apparent that despite the IT teams concerns about the performance and efficiency of a software solution, the DataCore storage hypervisor was a smarter choice than any hardware solution.

We knew that virtualization does not always offer the required performance, explains Kosecki. So we requested a number of proof-of-concept tests, which clearly demonstrated the advantages of DataCores solution in many areas all at once. The introduction of the DataCore virtual layer not only improved performance, availability and management efficiency, it was also more cost-effective than competing hardware-based solutions.

An Easy Transition to a More Effective Storage Infrastructure

DataCores SANsymphony-V storage hypervisor was installed on two physical servers running the Windows 2008 Server R2 operating system. All data is located and stored on EMC CX3 and CX4 disk arrays connected via Fibre Channel. According to Mr. Kosecki, installation was easy and trouble-free.

To both ensure high data availability and minimize the risks of a natural disaster, it was decided to physically relocate one node (a server running SANsymphony-V and one disk array) to the remote secondary data center.

We were able to transfer the node to the secondary data center and implement disaster recovery without having to disable the entire infrastructure, notes Kosecki. We had conducted many deployment test runs on the system and we decided to maintain the whole environment live. The switchover was very satisfactory and completely non-disruptive. We simply powered down one of the SAN switches and disconnected the disk array. The other node took over seamlessly. The data remained available, production continued, and our users did not notice that we had just implemented a new disaster recovery site.

Wharfedale Announces Successful Migration and Consolidation of a Globally Recognized Apparel Manufacturer"s SAP landscape, leading to higher Efficiency and Cost Savings

A virtual environment was then built using this design with Windows 2008 operating system, and SQL 2008 as database in a VMWare ESX 4.1 hypervisor environment on a VBlock. Wharfedale executed mock migrations from AS/400 DB2 platform to Windows 2008/SQL 2008 platform using SAP heterogeneous system copy procedures and industry best practices for migration. The actual production cutover was performed over the course of a weekend onto the new virtual platform for the ERP and BI components. The customer fully expect their VBlock to deliver robust performance needed for their business critical applications.

Emerson Network Power Considers How Far Organizations Should Go to Improve Data Center Efficiency

Emerson Network Power, a business of Emerson and a global leader in maximizing availability, capacity and efficiency of critical infrastructure, today released guidelines for organizations to consider when deciding to retrofit or replace a data center in the quest for greater efficiency.

Over the past few years, IT systems and data center infrastructure technologies that significantly improve efficiency have become available. Accordingly, the experts at Emerson Network Power now are frequently asked to help organizations determine how to take advantage of these improvements, especially in data centers that have run or are running out of capacity. Whats the better course of action? Should they retrofit the existing data center or replace it with a new one?

When to Retrofit

A retrofit is a good option when efficiency and stranded capacity are the major issues. Retrofitting has advantages over building a new data center, cost being at the top of the list, said Peter Panfil, vice president of global power, Emerson Network Power. Today, a new data center could cost in the range of $ 17M per megawatt, with ways to push this down to $ 12M per megawatt (for example, through UPS utilization improvements). A retrofit will run 25 percent to 40 percent of the new-build cost and in many cases can deliver the efficiency and capacity needed to extend the life of the data center.

Newer cooling, power and IT technologies that improve energy efficiency also help recover stranded capacity. Recovered capacity then can be allocated where needed.

Cold-aisle containment, intelligent controls that monitor conditions at the server and economization all lead to better efficiency by improving temperature and airflow management.

Additionally, implementing component technologies that optimize the cooling system to work more efficiently at partial loads is another good way to recover capacity without starting from scratch. Variable speed drives improve efficiency significantly over traditional fixed-speed fans, and electronically commutated (EC) plug fans are even more efficient. Both variable speed drives and EC plug fans can be installed on existing cooling units and their operation optimized by networking the cooling units through intelligent controls. Intelligent controls ensure the units work together as a system to optimize performance and efficiency.

Component upgrades such as these are much less intrusive than replacing entire cooling systems, and their payback is typically about two years, said Steve Madara, vice president and general manager, Emerson Network Powers Liebert Precision Cooling business. When you consider adding new components to upgrade existing precision cooling equipment, however, keep in mind that its like deciding when to trade in your car for a new model. Theres a certain point where you cant get enough mileage from retrofitted equipment to make it worth the investment.

Upgrades that make the power system more efficient include double-conversion UPS technology that eliminates conversion process losses, intelligent pairing of UPS modules and high-efficiency transformers. Additionally, adding a data center infrastructure management solution, implementing eco-mode on the UPS and optimizing the power path from the UPS to the servers all contribute to energy savings.

Data center managers also can employ Emerson Network Powers Energy Logic to improve energy efficiency. Energy Logic leverages the cascade effect that occurs when lower energy consumption at the component and device level is magnified by reducing demand on support systems. Its possible to achieve high overall energy savings from the cascade effect. Saving energy extends the useful life of the data center by freeing space in the data center that can be used for IT expansion.

When to Replace

While many options for retrofitting the data center exist, it is not always the practical choice. The downside of a major retrofit is that you are doing it in a live data center, Panfil said. If you are maxed out on space, its difficult to upgrade for efficiency without jeopardizing availability. Wharfedale Announces Successful SAP Landscape Migration for a Major Pharmaceutical Company to Gain Greater Flexibility and Efficiency in Managing Business Operations

The customers landscapes consisted of SAP ERP 6.0, BI 7.0 and SCM Livecache components running on IBM AIX. The customer was exploring the viability of migrating and consolidating their new SAP landscape to Virtual Computing Environment (VCE) utilizing VBlock solution based on EMC, CISCO and VMware technologies in a Linux/Oracle 11G RAC Grid environment.

Wharfedale performed Advanced SAP Landscape sizing for the customers VBlock environment based on the SAP application performance requirements. A virtual environment was then built using this design with Linux operating system, and Oracle 11G as database in a VMWare ESX 5.0 hypervisor environment on a VBlock. Wharfedale executed mock migrations from IBM AIX platform to Linux platform using SAP heterogeneous system copy procedures and industry best practices for migration. The actual production cutover was performed over the course of a weekend onto the new virtual platform for the ERP, BI and SCM Livecache components. The customer fully expects their VBlock to deliver robust performance needed for their business critical applications. Wharfedale was also involved in the Unicode conversion for ERP 6.0 and BI 7.0 components.

Apart from creating the SAP infrastructure and optimizing it for the SAP application, migration of server and storage platforms, tuning the SAP database, and improving their backup and recovery methodologies were some of the other services offered by Wharfedale Technologies to its pharmaceutical manufacturing customer. The project brought about an overall cost savings of around 35% and performance improvement by almost 60%.
