Stellar Industrial Supply Assures Fast, Reliable Backups with Unitrends

Lexington, SC (PRWEB) March 3, 2010

Unitrends, the leader in affordable, heterogeneous disk-based all-in-one data protection appliances, today announced that Stellar Industrial Supply, a large Northwest industrial supply company, eliminated their tape backup system challenges with a disk-to-disk data protection appliance from Unitrends. With Unitrends, Stellar Industrial Supply has minimized downtime and business interruption in the event of server failure while automating data protection processes through the easy-to-use Rapid Recovery Console.

Established in 1988, Stellar Industrial Supply has grown become the Northwest’s premier industrial, safety and marine supply, by purchasing additional companies to expand their service areas, adding warehouse locations and by increasing and diversifying their product lines. From eight strategic locations, Stellar serves small, medium and large manufacturers; Federal, State and local municipalities; and commercial construction companies in Washington, Alaska, Idaho and Oregon. Today, Stellar Industrial Supply manages 35,000 stocking items from more than 1,000 manufacturers across its six locations, and relies on computer systems and automation to support every critical business process.

To support this dynamic organization, data management is critical. From price optimization, to cost control, logistics, inventory management and ecommerce, rapid data recovery is needed to include not only the data files, but also the server configurations, core applications, Microsoft SQL databases, and Microsoft Exchange email.

So, in 2006, when Stellar Industrial Supply found that their tape backup solution was not keeping up with their needs, Keith Faller, senior IT administrator, decided to seek new options. Their tape backup would not fully recover a failed server to a dissimilar hardware platform. And, because it is often impossible to exactly match the hardware when replacing a failed server, the lack of dissimilar recovery presented unacceptable risk of downtime. Additionally, tape backup was slow and unreliable.

Our previous tape backup solution was not keeping up with our needs and we did not feel comfortable with the reliability of the previous backup software, said Faller. We needed a quicker and more reliable backup solution that also had the ability to do bare metal restores to dissimilar hardware. Unitrends gives us the reliability and features we were looking for.

When seeking a new solution, Faller wanted a product that was quicker and more reliable and could provide bare metal restores to dissimilar hardware. In early 2007, Stellar Industrial Supply selected a Unitrends DPU 2000 to protect up to 250 GB of system content. By mid-2009 Stellar Industrial Supply had outgrown the original unit, and decided to evaluate different alternatives to Unitrends. But after evaluating their options they decided that Unitrends offered a far more proven solution. That is why Stellar Industrial Supply decided to expand their software license and take advantage of Unitrends free hardware upgrade promotion.

Now Stellar Industrial is able to continue their valued Unitrends bare metal, file-level, Exchange, and SQL backups as well as their daily archiving to rotational drives for the purpose of disaster recovery without interruption. Their new Unitrends hardware has increased performance and enabled smooth operation of new features in the Rapid Recovery Console (RRC), which Faller finds extremely helpful, not only for monitoring and managing the backups but also for updating the DPU itself.

I like the new Rapid Recovery Console web interface, said Faller. This allows me to quickly check the status of currently running tasks, run reports, set up backup schedules, etc. You can even update the DPUs software from here.

In the future, Stellar Industrial Supply may be implementing site-to-site electronic vaulting. According to Faller, they are looking at vaulting their Unitrends backups using an offsite vaulting service, to further protect against disaster, and keep them competitive in the new decade.

Stellar Industrial Supply, like many other mid-sized companies today, struggled with the slow speed, complexity and resource drain of managing a tape backup solution, said Dr. Mark Campbell, Chief Operating Officer, Unitrends. At Unitrends, we strive to make data protection as simple and automated as possible, with disk-to-disk speed and efficiency all through a simple management console that can be accessed from anywhere at any time.

Our industrial customers are no longer blind to what is happening in the field or on the factory floor, said Jim Sabol, COO of Proxicast. Sensors and other data gathering devices can report information to a central site; or programmable logic controllers (PLC), data-loggers, and industrial computers can be remotely monitored, diagnosed and updated as needed. The new LAN-Cell 3 combines all of these devices into single 3G/4G data stream utilizing a single cellular account typically costing $ 50 to $ 60 per month, saving thousands of dollars per year per site, said Mr. Sabol.

Another major application for the LAN-Cell 3 is remote machine diagnostics and troubleshooting. A truck-roll to a site to diagnose a piece of equipment can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars if the location is very remote. We have a customer doing seismic monitoring that has equipment deployed in locations accessible only by helicopter, said Mr. Sabol. With the LAN-Cell 3, remote diagnostics and service can be performed instantly from any Internet connection.

Even when industrial sites are not so remote, establishing on-site communications can be challenging. Manufacturers of industrial equipment such as turbines, pumps, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, boilers, HVAC systems, and other large complex machinery that provide maintenance service for their equipment are often prohibited from connecting to their customers existing network. Proxicasts customers use the LAN-Cell 3G/4G VPN router as a drop-in communications solution providing remote access to the equipment while allaying the security concerns of the factorys IT department. The 3G/4G cellular connection gives the equipment manufacturer a secure, direct and unrestricted IP communications link to their systems on the customers premises.

The LAN-Cell 3 supports 2G, 3G and 4G cellular modem standards, but LAN-Cell 3 is specifically designed to take advantage of the new high speed 4G (LTE, HSPA+) networks. It supports many of the currently available off-the-shelf 4G USB modems. With speeds of up to 27 Mbps, many new high-bandwidth mobile applications are now possible.

24 Million Industrial Wireless Sensing Points in 2016, Says ON World

San Diego, CA (PRWEB) June 21, 2012

An erratic global economy did not prevent the industrial Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) market from doubling over the past two years, according to a recently published report by ON World, a global technology research firm. Early adopters have demonstrated that WSN is secure, reliable and can be targeted at new monitoring and control solutions that were previously deemed too expensive or located in prohibitively difficult environments. Networks are expanding and ON World identified several deployments with over 3,000 WSN nodes.

The migration to standards based wireless mesh systems in the process automation space has replaced proprietary systems faster than what our 2010 survey indicated, says Mareca Hatler, ON Worlds research director. However, competition for WSN protocols continues to be intense and point-to-point and point-to-multipoint wireless systems are experiencing high growth rates in key verticals such as oil and gas.

For the 2012 industrial Wireless Sensor Network report, ON World collaborated with the International Society of Automation (ISA), HART Communication Foundation (HCF) and the Wireless Industrial Networking Alliance (WINA) to conduct a survey on WSN with 216 industrial automation professionals. ON World also interviewed 55+ individuals with leading industrial automation vendors, suppliers and industry groups.

In ON World’s survey, 70% of the end users are planning WSN or additional WSN deployments within the next 18 months. The survey also found that approximately an equal number of respondents prefer WirelessHART or a hybrid strategy that includes WirelessHART and ISA100.11a.

The standards migration is changing the industrial WSN landscape. This is demonstrated by Linears acquisition of Dust Networks and a growing number of new entrants such as AwiaTech, E-Senza and Softing that are focused on open platforms and lowering development costs. Industrial wireless sensing and control opportunities are also growing for non-mesh 802.15.4, WiFi, Bluetooth/802.15.1 and Ultra Wideband.

Installed wireless industrial field devices will increase by 553% between 2011 and 2016 when there will be 24 million wireless-enabled sensors and actuators, or sensing points, deployed worldwide. At this time, 39% will be used for new applications that are only feasible with wireless sensing.

ON Worlds recently published report, Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks, covers the global market for industrial Wireless Sensor Networking with 5-year forecasts by geography, landscape (e.g. process, vertical industries, discrete/factory automation), target market (e.g. oil & gas, refining/petrochemicals, chemicals, food & beverage, etc.), application and technology. WSN protocols covered include 802.15.4 (mesh and non-mesh), WiFi and other wireless technologies including point-to-point/point-to-multipoint systems. The report also provides the key findings from the recently completed survey as well as an extensive technology evaluation and competitive analysis of 85 companies in five product segments.

Industrial Controls and its parent company, ERIKS, are pleased to announce its acquisition of IEC Control Shop, a Texas based distributor of HVAC controls for over twenty years. IEC Control Shop has branch offices in Fort Worth and Dallas, Texas which will complement Industrial Controls existing network of 18 branches and extend its territorial footprint into the rapidly growing Southwest and Gulf Coast.

The addition of IEC Control Shop broadens Industrial Controls coverage with existing product lines and expands its capabilities. Along with the aligned HVAC controls portfolio, the companies synergy provides Industrial Controls with an increased opportunity to extend its industrial product offerings into the Southwest region. Merging with IEC Control Shop will give us an exceptional platform to continue our expansion plans in the growing Texas market, said Joe Eichelberger, President and CEO of Industrial Controls. We are committed to maintaining excellent service and offering an increased product breadth to our customers.

Bruce Gray, President of IEC Control Shop, will lead Industrial Controls two newest branches in the Southwest territory. Bruce brings the widespread customer and technical experience needed to manage Industrial Controls business in the region. The merger will allow us to better serve our customers by offering them a broader product selection, said Gray. Geographically extending its business in the Southwest area has been a critical target for Industrial Controls and should position them for further expansion.
