Minnesota Counties Information Systems Achieves Reliable, High Performance Data Protection with Unitrends

Columbia, SC (PRWEB) February 8, 2010

Unitrends (unitrends.com), the leader in affordable, heterogeneous D2D (Disk-to-Disk) and D2D2D (Disk-to-Disk-to-Disk)-based data protection backup appliances, today announced that Minnesota Counties Information Systems (MCIS) has achieved reliable, high-performance data protection for its mixed Microsoft and IBM iSeries operating environment using a disk-based appliance from Unitrends.

Minnesota Counties Information Systems (MCIS) is a joint-powers organization dedicated to providing quality, integrated information solutions through customized computer applications and responsive support to member counties. Established in 1975, MCIS provides services to thirteen full member counties and seven associate member counties. With offices in Grand Rapids, Minn., MCIS relies on a nimble staff of 12 to provide the software and technical support for its counties computerized work processes, e-government services and Web-based communications.

Just like most local governments, MCIS must conserve taxpayer dollars while delivering an increasingly high level of service. Given this mission, MCIS needed to improve its data protection reliability by shifting from its previous tape backup solution, which was becoming increasingly less reliable.

For disaster recovery purposes, MCIS also needed its replacement system to include a way to maintain offsite copies of backups while also providing highly automated local backups with ease of recovery in case of disaster. Additionally, it had to be easy to use with high-quality support so that MCIS could implement and manage the solution with existing staff. Finally, the solution had to support the organizations mix of operating environments which included Microsoft Windows, Microsoft SQL databases, Microsoft Exchange Server and IBM iSeries systems.

MCIS looked at the backup services offered by a local managed services provider, but in the end decided they would prefer to purchase a disk-to-disk solution that could be administered by MCIS staff. Based on a recommendation from its solution partner, CPS, MCIS selected a disk-to-disk backup solution from Unitrends.

I like Unitrends emphasis on products for small to medium businesses, and also their relationship with our partner CPS, Patricia Lenoch, network administrator for MCIS. I have been able to restore files many times without having to worry about having the correct media. Unitrends also offers great support… always excellent, timely, and thorough.”

Now, MCIS data archives are copied automatically on rotational (archive) drives as part of the Unitrends system. These removable drives with copies of backups are transferred to a secure offsite location, while the original backups remain on the local Unitrends appliance. This is a big improvement over tape, where the media could be transferred to a remote site, but then those backups were no longer readily available for quick recovery of files or systems at the local site.

Unitrends appliances are an ideal solution for environments that require data protection for a mix of operating environments without added cost or burden on IT staff productivity, said Dr. Mark Campbell, COO, Unitrends. Unitrends also provides an efficient method for delivering both the back up and archiving protection organizations like MCIS need all from a single, unified solution.

Alan Ritchey, Inc. Relies on Unitrends for Reliable, Easy to Use Backup and Archiving

Columbia, SC (PRWEB) February 16, 2010

Unitrends (http://www.unitrends.com), the leader in affordable, heterogeneous disk-based data protection appliances, today announced that Alan Ritchey, Inc., a diversified manufacturer in northeast Texas, relies on a Unitrends disk-to-disk appliance for reliable, easy-to-use, all-in-one backup and archiving.

Alan Ritchey, Inc. is a transportation, mail delivery and agriculture manufacturer and supplier headquartered in the City of Valley View, in northeast Texas. From its founding in 1964, Alan Ritchey, Inc. has grown to become a highly diversified and successful business with 1,100 employees engaged in agriculture, feed mill, oil field services, manufacturing, and transportation operations.

In 2007, Alan Ritchey, Inc. decided it needed to reduce the risk of lost data or business interruption due to a server crash, database corruption, or site-level disaster. This meant it was time to replace its aging tape-based backup solution that they company was using to backup and store its critical company files. The tape-based system was slow, unreliable and difficult to manage.

When selecting a new data protection solution, the IT staff at Alan Ritchey, Inc. was interested in the ease of use and reliability of disk-based backup solutions. They also wanted to move backup data offsite so that they could assure reliable protection of critical business information in the event of fire or site-level disaster. After seeing the advanced backup and recovery features of Unitrends during a product demo, selecting a Unitrends disk-to-disk appliance was an easy choice.

Our reseller invited us to see a demo of Unitrends, and we were sold, said Brad Hieb, network administrator, Alan Ritchey, Inc. Unitrends quick file restore times are the best feature. Yet, the software maintenance plan is also an advantage. Some companies try to nickel and dime you out of every upgrade, and if you are not comfortable installing it they then charge you support for that too. Unitrends support contract seems to cover it all.

After implementing Unitrends, Alan Ritchey, Inc. now enjoys daily disk-to-disk (D2D) file backups that are much faster and more reliable than what the old tape backup solution provided. The company also performs archiving using the Unitrends solution with archive disks that are rotated offsite, keeping the original backups on the Unitrends appliance for speedy recovery when needed.

Unitrends is pleased to provide Alan Ritchey, Inc. with the data protection solution that lives up to the quality and dependability so critical to their business, said Maria Ellison, senior vice president, support, Unitrends. As a company, we deliver the comprehensive service and support that is not only prompt and reliable but also proactive. With the Unitrends Data Assurance plan, Alan Ritchey benefits from hardware, software and technical support all in one program. Ultimately, we strive to deliver the service and support that stands head and shoulders above the rest.

Stellar Industrial Supply Assures Fast, Reliable Backups with Unitrends

Lexington, SC (PRWEB) March 3, 2010

Unitrends, the leader in affordable, heterogeneous disk-based all-in-one data protection appliances, today announced that Stellar Industrial Supply, a large Northwest industrial supply company, eliminated their tape backup system challenges with a disk-to-disk data protection appliance from Unitrends. With Unitrends, Stellar Industrial Supply has minimized downtime and business interruption in the event of server failure while automating data protection processes through the easy-to-use Rapid Recovery Console.

Established in 1988, Stellar Industrial Supply has grown become the Northwest’s premier industrial, safety and marine supply, by purchasing additional companies to expand their service areas, adding warehouse locations and by increasing and diversifying their product lines. From eight strategic locations, Stellar serves small, medium and large manufacturers; Federal, State and local municipalities; and commercial construction companies in Washington, Alaska, Idaho and Oregon. Today, Stellar Industrial Supply manages 35,000 stocking items from more than 1,000 manufacturers across its six locations, and relies on computer systems and automation to support every critical business process.

To support this dynamic organization, data management is critical. From price optimization, to cost control, logistics, inventory management and ecommerce, rapid data recovery is needed to include not only the data files, but also the server configurations, core applications, Microsoft SQL databases, and Microsoft Exchange email.

So, in 2006, when Stellar Industrial Supply found that their tape backup solution was not keeping up with their needs, Keith Faller, senior IT administrator, decided to seek new options. Their tape backup would not fully recover a failed server to a dissimilar hardware platform. And, because it is often impossible to exactly match the hardware when replacing a failed server, the lack of dissimilar recovery presented unacceptable risk of downtime. Additionally, tape backup was slow and unreliable.

Our previous tape backup solution was not keeping up with our needs and we did not feel comfortable with the reliability of the previous backup software, said Faller. We needed a quicker and more reliable backup solution that also had the ability to do bare metal restores to dissimilar hardware. Unitrends gives us the reliability and features we were looking for.

When seeking a new solution, Faller wanted a product that was quicker and more reliable and could provide bare metal restores to dissimilar hardware. In early 2007, Stellar Industrial Supply selected a Unitrends DPU 2000 to protect up to 250 GB of system content. By mid-2009 Stellar Industrial Supply had outgrown the original unit, and decided to evaluate different alternatives to Unitrends. But after evaluating their options they decided that Unitrends offered a far more proven solution. That is why Stellar Industrial Supply decided to expand their software license and take advantage of Unitrends free hardware upgrade promotion.

Now Stellar Industrial is able to continue their valued Unitrends bare metal, file-level, Exchange, and SQL backups as well as their daily archiving to rotational drives for the purpose of disaster recovery without interruption. Their new Unitrends hardware has increased performance and enabled smooth operation of new features in the Rapid Recovery Console (RRC), which Faller finds extremely helpful, not only for monitoring and managing the backups but also for updating the DPU itself.

I like the new Rapid Recovery Console web interface, said Faller. This allows me to quickly check the status of currently running tasks, run reports, set up backup schedules, etc. You can even update the DPUs software from here.

In the future, Stellar Industrial Supply may be implementing site-to-site electronic vaulting. According to Faller, they are looking at vaulting their Unitrends backups using an offsite vaulting service, to further protect against disaster, and keep them competitive in the new decade.

Stellar Industrial Supply, like many other mid-sized companies today, struggled with the slow speed, complexity and resource drain of managing a tape backup solution, said Dr. Mark Campbell, Chief Operating Officer, Unitrends. At Unitrends, we strive to make data protection as simple and automated as possible, with disk-to-disk speed and efficiency all through a simple management console that can be accessed from anywhere at any time.

Hosting.coms Intersite Cross Connect Solution Provides Reliable, Secure and Scalable Private Data Transport

Denver, CO (PRWEB) March 17, 2011

Hosting.com, the leading provider of cloud hosting and recovery services, today announced the availability of its Intersite Cross Connect(ICC) solution. Hosting.com developed the ICC solution to support customers with high volume or time-sensitive replication requirements and latency or jitter-sensitive applications.

For many companies, developing infrastructures to have zero downtime is both cost prohibitive and resource restricted; however, business continuity and disaster recovery solutions continue to be listed as one of the highest priorities by IT executives. ICC can help companies meet a critical component of their BCDR plans reliable, private transport between servers and datacenters for continuity and failover purposes. When data moves between Hosting.com datacenters, ICC guarantees the data is secure, the connection is reliable, and the service is fast and scalable.

ICC is ideal for businesses with large-scale replication solutions, data migrations and backups, regulatory requirements, and latency sensitive applications. ICC is a necessity as businesses continue to virtualize and use computing resources in multiple geographic locations.

Gabe Grice, Hosting.com Product Manager, commented, While it is possible to utilize a public internet connection between datacenter locations, the public internet is not as reliable or secure as a private connection. Mission-critical applications and regulated data and storage files should utilize private data transport to eliminate the availability and security risks of being on the public internet.

Hosting.coms unique connectivity between geographically-dispersed datacenters and Cloud Super Sites has made it a destination for companies seeking datacenter interconnectivity and redundant cloud-based solutions. In addition, the ability to quickly scale redundant, always on solutions in as little as 48 hours recently drew a fast-growth, enterprise-lending SaaS provider to Hosting.com. This companys cloud solution is widely used by mortgage banks, lenders and service providers and utilizes the ICC service to connect their database servers between two Hosting.com Cloud Super Sites. The secure and reliable ICC solution guarantees they can quickly add new customers and that their customers can access their mission-critical SaaS application at all times.

Darrell Hyde, Hosting.com Director of Network Security and Engineering, added, ICC is based on a feature called MPLS Circuit Cross Connect that is supported on our Juniper EX series switches. In essence, the Circuit Cross Connect emulates a traditional leased line service like a T1 or DS3 with a fraction of the provisioning time, and far more flexible capacity. Whereas traditional telco services can take 30-45 days for provisioning, Hosting.com can provision new ICC services and adjust capacity on existing ICC installations in as little as 48 hours.

Hosting.com recently released the 2011 Cloud Trends Report and Best Practices Report which indicated BCDR is driving explosive growth in cloud computing during the next 18 months. The Dingley Press Deploys RELDATA Unified File & Block Storage Solutions for High Availability and Reliable Virtualized Server Environment

Parsippany, New Jersey (PRWEB) September 13, 2011

RELDATA Inc., a leader in unified storage solutions over iSCSI, today announced that The Dingley Press Inc., one of the worlds largest catalog printers, is using RELDATA storage solutions for comprehensive storage and data availability for multiple terabytes of business data in a virtualized computing environment. To eliminate the risk of costly downtime, The Dingley Press implemented RELDATA storage solutions to assure round-the-clock availability for its data-intensive business operations.

The Dingley Press, located in Lisbon, Maine, has served the unique needs of catalogers since 1928. The companys long-term success reflects a high level of customer care and service that includes significant paper and postage savings with a unique rightsize press format, advanced co-mailing and distribution capabilities, and exceptional manufacturing reliability.

To support its complex printing and distribution operations, which deliver more than two million catalogs daily, The Dingley Press uses business systems such as enterprise requirements planning, email communications and many other business applications. The applications are retained in multiple virtual servers that require 24x7availability. Any system downtime drastically impacts company operations.

Downtime for us is extremely costly, said Mike Martell, systems manager at The Dingley Press. To support our operations we required a cost-effective storage solution with reliable failover that would eliminate risk of downtime. RELDATA offered it all. With two RELDATA systems in place we have no single point of failure. One system can go up in smoke and users would never know it. If we lose one system completely, all storage operations move seamlessly over to the other system.

RELDATA offers high-performing, cost-efficient storage solutions designed for physical and virtualized computing environments for mid-market organizations. Based on a fully redundant architecture with no single point of failure, RELDATA provides the high availability needed for managing multiple virtual servers or desktops and other complex applications.

RELDATA delivers a highly reliable, cost-effective solution for companies such as The Dingley Press that demand 24×7 availability, said Victor Walker, CEO of RELDATA. We pride ourselves on addressing our customers’ individual requirements and implementing storage solutions that deliver real value and flexibility on top of the performance and reliability features that are so critical to supporting business operations.”

“Another reason we chose RELDATA was flexibility – they worked with us to achieve our specific objectives, such as helping us develop the tools we needed for the snapshot backup system, added Martell. Other companies may offer fine technology but you’re stuck with a pre-packaged set of features that aren’t necessarily the best fit for your existing requirements. RELDATA offered the right mix of high performance technology, reliability and flexibility at an attractive price.”

The Dingley Press installed a pair of RELDATA storage systems in a failover mirrored cluster, running 8TB (total of 16TB in cluster available). These systems work seamlessly together, maintaining two full copies of the total storage environment and supporting the critical applications running SQL, Exchange, VMware and several industry-specific applications as well as production monitoring for all phases of production and integration with the postal system.

In addition to delivering superior system availability, the RELDATA storage systems also have enhanced The Dingley Presss data backup processes. Data on The Dingley Presss storage volumes is provisioned to file servers and for persistent storage for virtual servers. These are backed up using RELDATA RELbot scripts which take a snapshot of each of the provisioned volumes at the close of the business day. This assures that The Dingley Press always has a current and available backup if restoration is ever required.

New Faster, More Reliable Storage For Backup & Data Recovery: Servosity Boosts Its Backup Solutions With Aberdeens AberSAN ZXP

Santa Fe Srpings, CA (PRWEB) December 24, 2011

We had some very tough challenges, says Damien Stevens, founder and CEO of Servosity (http://www.servosity.com). We needed 24/7/365 operations with no maintenance windows or unplanned downtime [and] unlimited growth capabilities, and we needed the speed of SAS drives and the sophistication of an Enterprise SANand we needed all that for far less the cost of an enterprise SAN or even SAS drives. We needed SAS performance and reliability on a SATA budget.

Choosing The Right Solution

Servosity knew it wanted to take advantage of Nexentas NexentaStor NAS/SAN software platform, but it also knew it would need the right hardware to run it. Thats why Servosity opted for two of Aberdeens AberSAN ZXP High Availability ZFS SAN units and one 45-bay JBOD in order to handle the NexentaStor XZFS file system with 144TB of licensing. Servosity chose Aberdeens AberSAN solution for its versatility as well as its ability to work well with the

NexentaStor platform.

The ZFS file system is stable, scalable, and fast, Stevens says. On top of that, Nexentas NexentaStor commercial offering adds additional features as well as enterprise support, and Aberdeen is one of the few vendors that can custom-build a hardware solution designed specifically for NexentaStor. Its the perfect marriage of hardware and software.

Aberdeens AberSAN ZXP product is designed to be highly scalable and has a variety of other customizable options. For instance, the base solution is a 2U head unit, but there are options for 3U and 4U JBOD expansions, as well. There are also multiple power supply, OS, and storage options so companies can build the right model for their needs. Its this customization that allowed Servosity to deploy these products and know they would perform as expected.

Implementation & Results

Stevens admits that Servosity had some unique needs from the start and that it would be difficult to match them, so he knew there would be challenges along the way. With some of these technologies, weve been a very early adopter, Stevens says. Because of this, Servosity went through an extensive testing phase to find the right balance of hardware and software to get the performance it needed. He says Servosity wouldnt have been able to create the perfect solution to its problem without the constant support of Aberdeen, which included the company sending evaluation units to Servosity and providing advice and expertise that aided the company in building the perfect solution for its needs.

With a sophisticated system spanning multiple data centers and huge amounts of storage, theres much more to it than buying a product, Stevens says. The difference for us has been Aberdeen and Nexenta working together with our engineers to custom-build and then custom-tune a system that meets our needs and has exceeded our expectations.

Once the entire system was installed, Servosity started seeing the benefits. Stevens says that traditional systems such as the one the company installed are often at risk for silent data corruption, which happens naturally over time with a constant flow of data. To prevent this, ZFS systems self-heal when a disk presents corrupt data, which protects against hardware failure and prevents the hardware from corrupting the data, according to Stevens. In addition to preventing data corruption, Servosity is pleased that the system can use solid-state drives to cache for SATA and SAS drives to make the system faster for a lower cost.

Using Aberdeens Products Now & In The Future

Overall, Servosity is extremely happy with its decision to invest in Aberdeens AberSAN solution and plans on using Aberdeens products in the future. In fact, Stevens says that Servositys projections show a need for 400% of our current infrastructure in the next 12 months. To help meet the demand, Servosity will continue to use Aberdeen for its highly customizable and scalable Nexenta products in order to help the company continue to grow.
