BPI Information Systems Protects The Heterogeneous Data For 35 Customers Using Unitrends

Columbia, SC (PRWEB) January 13, 2010

Unitrends (unitrends.com), the leader in affordable, heterogeneous D2D (Disk-to-Disk) and D2D2D (Disk-to-Disk-to-Disk)-based data protection backup appliances, today announced that BPI Information Systems, a growing systems integrator and managed services provider (MSP) in Ohio, has optimized the delivery of backup and disaster recovery services for the heterogeneous data of 35 separate customers using Unitrends D2D data protection backup appliances.

Headquartered in Brecksville, Ohio near Cleveland and established in 1976, BPI Information Systems has served as a cornerstone for the IT Industry in Northeast Ohio. Privately owned, BPI Information Systems specializes in the design, installation, support, and emergency repair of network solutions for business, government and education. In 2005, BPI Information Systems realized that companies of all sizes need to protect their valuable business systems and data around the clock with full-featured cost-effective solutions. In response to this need, BPI Information Systems began to develop a new services offering: a backup service that would simplify, accelerate, and automate both local and remote backup.

Knowing that its customers each rely on multiple operating systems, BPI Information Systems needed a solution that would offer rapid recovery and complete restoration for most operating systems, especially Windows, NetWare and Linux platforms. The growing MSP selected Unitrends D2D data protection backup appliances because they were the only disk-based solution to offer automatic transfer of backups to an offsite location for affordable distributed disaster recovery that supported the wide range of operating platforms and applications used by BPI Information Systems customers.

We installed 35 Unitrends units at our customers sites that we manage every single day, said Scott D’Amore, senior systems engineer, BPI Information Systems. Since deploying Unitrends the backup window has gotten shorter for our customers; Unitrends backs up a lot quicker than tape backup. And, the Unitrends systems support every environment and feature that we need. BareMetal, Exchange, SQL, encryption, vaulting you name it, we use it.

Even as the backup window has been reduced, BPI Information Systems customers now also enjoy the benefits of whole system protection, meaning that entire servers can be recovered rapidly in the event of server failure. BPI Information Systems is able to not only protect physical servers, but also, with the growth of virtualization, the Unitrends solution permits whole system protection of customers virtual servers.

Now BPI Information Systems is able to remotely manage and protect more than 350 servers across their 35 small and mid-size customers in just hours. This improves BPI Information Systems IT staff productivity and profitability while delivering affordable, comprehensive disaster recovery for its diverse customers.

Sharonview Federal Credit Union Gains Disaster Recovery Assurance While Reducing Backup Windows with Unitrends

Columbia, SC (PRWEB) January 26, 2010

Unitrends (unitrends.com), the leader in affordable, heterogeneous D2D (Disk-to-Disk) and D2D2D (Disk-to-Disk-to-Disk)-based data protection backup appliances, today announced that Sharonview Federal Credit Union has recently upgraded to Unitrends latest data protection appliances after successfully relying on Unitrends for more than five years. With its new Unitrends solutions in place, the growing non-profit credit union has cut backup windows in half while assuring disaster recovery preparedness by vaulting its data to an offsite location using Unitrends technology.

Headquartered in Fort Mill, SC, Sharonview Federal Credit Union began as an employer-based credit union in the 1950s. Today, Sharonview is a full-service, not-for-profit financial institution with assets of $ 900 million serving more than 59,000 members with 22 branches in South Carolina, North Carolina and New Jersey.

As it grew, Sharonview was facing a dramatically increasing quantity of data, an expanded network infrastructure, and storage environment complexity. In 2005, Sharonview decided it was time to get away from the credit unions painstaking tape backup process. Sharonviews tape backups were a hassle to manage, requiring manual review of logs to determine whether backup jobs were successful. Whats worse, there was no way to fully recover a failed server, even after extensive investment in a new tape library and new tape backup software.

While seeking a new solution with better speed and reliability for up to 1TB of data, Sharonview also wanted to improve its disaster recovery readiness while also encrypting critical financial data to meet privacy and security requirements. After evaluating its options, Sharonview purchased disk-to-disk data protection units from Unitrends. Following a successful implementation in 2006 and efficient performance results ever since, Sharonview recently upgraded to Unitrends latest technology in 2009 to accommodate their growing data store. Now with three new Unitrends appliances in place, the growing credit union has cut their backup window in half.

We were probably one of the early adopters of Unitrends, said Mark Johnson, CIO, Sharonview Federal Credit Union. Now after five years we are completely satisfied. When it was time to expand after five years, we didn’t even look anywhere else, we were happy with the Unitrends product.

Today, Sharonview uses Unitrends to backup SANs and individual servers and to vault data to another location for disaster recovery assurance. It also uses the Unitrends Baremetal recovery feature for whole system protection, and the included Unitrends Exchange Agent for email protection. Backups are encrypted with InCrypt 256-AES encryption, delivering the integrated security required by this member-focused, and highly successful financial institution.

When we migrated from tape to Unitrends five years ago we cut our backup way down, then cut it in half again when we upgraded to the latest Unitrends hardware earlier this year, said Kevin Hughes, network engineer, Sharonview Federal Credit Union. We invested in a SAN earlier this year, and are now using the Unitrends product to back up individual servers as well as our (new) SAN.

Its always exciting to play a role in the business success of our customers, said Maria Ellison, senior vice president, support, Unitrends. Sharonview Federal Credit Union has been very pleased in their ability to perform individual file recovery in minutes versus hours with Unitrends while receiving both whole system local backups and offsite vaulting at a remote location for complete disaster recovery.

Minnesota Counties Information Systems Achieves Reliable, High Performance Data Protection with Unitrends

Columbia, SC (PRWEB) February 8, 2010

Unitrends (unitrends.com), the leader in affordable, heterogeneous D2D (Disk-to-Disk) and D2D2D (Disk-to-Disk-to-Disk)-based data protection backup appliances, today announced that Minnesota Counties Information Systems (MCIS) has achieved reliable, high-performance data protection for its mixed Microsoft and IBM iSeries operating environment using a disk-based appliance from Unitrends.

Minnesota Counties Information Systems (MCIS) is a joint-powers organization dedicated to providing quality, integrated information solutions through customized computer applications and responsive support to member counties. Established in 1975, MCIS provides services to thirteen full member counties and seven associate member counties. With offices in Grand Rapids, Minn., MCIS relies on a nimble staff of 12 to provide the software and technical support for its counties computerized work processes, e-government services and Web-based communications.

Just like most local governments, MCIS must conserve taxpayer dollars while delivering an increasingly high level of service. Given this mission, MCIS needed to improve its data protection reliability by shifting from its previous tape backup solution, which was becoming increasingly less reliable.

For disaster recovery purposes, MCIS also needed its replacement system to include a way to maintain offsite copies of backups while also providing highly automated local backups with ease of recovery in case of disaster. Additionally, it had to be easy to use with high-quality support so that MCIS could implement and manage the solution with existing staff. Finally, the solution had to support the organizations mix of operating environments which included Microsoft Windows, Microsoft SQL databases, Microsoft Exchange Server and IBM iSeries systems.

MCIS looked at the backup services offered by a local managed services provider, but in the end decided they would prefer to purchase a disk-to-disk solution that could be administered by MCIS staff. Based on a recommendation from its solution partner, CPS, MCIS selected a disk-to-disk backup solution from Unitrends.

I like Unitrends emphasis on products for small to medium businesses, and also their relationship with our partner CPS, Patricia Lenoch, network administrator for MCIS. I have been able to restore files many times without having to worry about having the correct media. Unitrends also offers great support… always excellent, timely, and thorough.”

Now, MCIS data archives are copied automatically on rotational (archive) drives as part of the Unitrends system. These removable drives with copies of backups are transferred to a secure offsite location, while the original backups remain on the local Unitrends appliance. This is a big improvement over tape, where the media could be transferred to a remote site, but then those backups were no longer readily available for quick recovery of files or systems at the local site.

Unitrends appliances are an ideal solution for environments that require data protection for a mix of operating environments without added cost or burden on IT staff productivity, said Dr. Mark Campbell, COO, Unitrends. Unitrends also provides an efficient method for delivering both the back up and archiving protection organizations like MCIS need all from a single, unified solution.

Alan Ritchey, Inc. Relies on Unitrends for Reliable, Easy to Use Backup and Archiving

Columbia, SC (PRWEB) February 16, 2010

Unitrends (http://www.unitrends.com), the leader in affordable, heterogeneous disk-based data protection appliances, today announced that Alan Ritchey, Inc., a diversified manufacturer in northeast Texas, relies on a Unitrends disk-to-disk appliance for reliable, easy-to-use, all-in-one backup and archiving.

Alan Ritchey, Inc. is a transportation, mail delivery and agriculture manufacturer and supplier headquartered in the City of Valley View, in northeast Texas. From its founding in 1964, Alan Ritchey, Inc. has grown to become a highly diversified and successful business with 1,100 employees engaged in agriculture, feed mill, oil field services, manufacturing, and transportation operations.

In 2007, Alan Ritchey, Inc. decided it needed to reduce the risk of lost data or business interruption due to a server crash, database corruption, or site-level disaster. This meant it was time to replace its aging tape-based backup solution that they company was using to backup and store its critical company files. The tape-based system was slow, unreliable and difficult to manage.

When selecting a new data protection solution, the IT staff at Alan Ritchey, Inc. was interested in the ease of use and reliability of disk-based backup solutions. They also wanted to move backup data offsite so that they could assure reliable protection of critical business information in the event of fire or site-level disaster. After seeing the advanced backup and recovery features of Unitrends during a product demo, selecting a Unitrends disk-to-disk appliance was an easy choice.

Our reseller invited us to see a demo of Unitrends, and we were sold, said Brad Hieb, network administrator, Alan Ritchey, Inc. Unitrends quick file restore times are the best feature. Yet, the software maintenance plan is also an advantage. Some companies try to nickel and dime you out of every upgrade, and if you are not comfortable installing it they then charge you support for that too. Unitrends support contract seems to cover it all.

After implementing Unitrends, Alan Ritchey, Inc. now enjoys daily disk-to-disk (D2D) file backups that are much faster and more reliable than what the old tape backup solution provided. The company also performs archiving using the Unitrends solution with archive disks that are rotated offsite, keeping the original backups on the Unitrends appliance for speedy recovery when needed.

Unitrends is pleased to provide Alan Ritchey, Inc. with the data protection solution that lives up to the quality and dependability so critical to their business, said Maria Ellison, senior vice president, support, Unitrends. As a company, we deliver the comprehensive service and support that is not only prompt and reliable but also proactive. With the Unitrends Data Assurance plan, Alan Ritchey benefits from hardware, software and technical support all in one program. Ultimately, we strive to deliver the service and support that stands head and shoulders above the rest.

Stellar Industrial Supply Assures Fast, Reliable Backups with Unitrends

Lexington, SC (PRWEB) March 3, 2010

Unitrends, the leader in affordable, heterogeneous disk-based all-in-one data protection appliances, today announced that Stellar Industrial Supply, a large Northwest industrial supply company, eliminated their tape backup system challenges with a disk-to-disk data protection appliance from Unitrends. With Unitrends, Stellar Industrial Supply has minimized downtime and business interruption in the event of server failure while automating data protection processes through the easy-to-use Rapid Recovery Console.

Established in 1988, Stellar Industrial Supply has grown become the Northwest’s premier industrial, safety and marine supply, by purchasing additional companies to expand their service areas, adding warehouse locations and by increasing and diversifying their product lines. From eight strategic locations, Stellar serves small, medium and large manufacturers; Federal, State and local municipalities; and commercial construction companies in Washington, Alaska, Idaho and Oregon. Today, Stellar Industrial Supply manages 35,000 stocking items from more than 1,000 manufacturers across its six locations, and relies on computer systems and automation to support every critical business process.

To support this dynamic organization, data management is critical. From price optimization, to cost control, logistics, inventory management and ecommerce, rapid data recovery is needed to include not only the data files, but also the server configurations, core applications, Microsoft SQL databases, and Microsoft Exchange email.

So, in 2006, when Stellar Industrial Supply found that their tape backup solution was not keeping up with their needs, Keith Faller, senior IT administrator, decided to seek new options. Their tape backup would not fully recover a failed server to a dissimilar hardware platform. And, because it is often impossible to exactly match the hardware when replacing a failed server, the lack of dissimilar recovery presented unacceptable risk of downtime. Additionally, tape backup was slow and unreliable.

Our previous tape backup solution was not keeping up with our needs and we did not feel comfortable with the reliability of the previous backup software, said Faller. We needed a quicker and more reliable backup solution that also had the ability to do bare metal restores to dissimilar hardware. Unitrends gives us the reliability and features we were looking for.

When seeking a new solution, Faller wanted a product that was quicker and more reliable and could provide bare metal restores to dissimilar hardware. In early 2007, Stellar Industrial Supply selected a Unitrends DPU 2000 to protect up to 250 GB of system content. By mid-2009 Stellar Industrial Supply had outgrown the original unit, and decided to evaluate different alternatives to Unitrends. But after evaluating their options they decided that Unitrends offered a far more proven solution. That is why Stellar Industrial Supply decided to expand their software license and take advantage of Unitrends free hardware upgrade promotion.

Now Stellar Industrial is able to continue their valued Unitrends bare metal, file-level, Exchange, and SQL backups as well as their daily archiving to rotational drives for the purpose of disaster recovery without interruption. Their new Unitrends hardware has increased performance and enabled smooth operation of new features in the Rapid Recovery Console (RRC), which Faller finds extremely helpful, not only for monitoring and managing the backups but also for updating the DPU itself.

I like the new Rapid Recovery Console web interface, said Faller. This allows me to quickly check the status of currently running tasks, run reports, set up backup schedules, etc. You can even update the DPUs software from here.

In the future, Stellar Industrial Supply may be implementing site-to-site electronic vaulting. According to Faller, they are looking at vaulting their Unitrends backups using an offsite vaulting service, to further protect against disaster, and keep them competitive in the new decade.

Stellar Industrial Supply, like many other mid-sized companies today, struggled with the slow speed, complexity and resource drain of managing a tape backup solution, said Dr. Mark Campbell, Chief Operating Officer, Unitrends. At Unitrends, we strive to make data protection as simple and automated as possible, with disk-to-disk speed and efficiency all through a simple management console that can be accessed from anywhere at any time.

Gillett School District Relies on Unitrends for Fast, Reliable Data Backups

Columbia, SC (PRWEB) March 29, 2010

Unitrends, the leader in affordable, heterogeneous, vertically integrated, disk-based all-in-one data protection appliances, today announced that Gillett School District, a kindergarten through grade 12 school district which includes parochial schools, military academies and secondary schools that provide academic and technical courses in Wisconsin, relies on a Unitrends for reliable, easy-to-use backup and archiving.

Before March of 2007, when Gillett began using Unitrends, the school district had problems recovering files quickly and easily or even recovering files at all. Tim Rysewyk, computer technician for Gillett School District, was worried that unreliable tape solution would not only be problematic with slow backups, but he was also concerned the tapes would not protect the important operating systems for Gilletts student and financial software.

In 2007, Gilletts decision to change to Unitrends solved the problems of their slow, unreliable tape solution.

I needed to have a reliable fast recovery solution, and Unitrends offers all that you need, said Rysewyk. Its reliable, fast solution makes it easy to recover files from backups. There are no more tapes to worry about and Unitrends makes backing up servers a snap.

Unitrends is successfully backing up Windows Server 2003 Standard and Windows 2003 Exchange, and vital student and financial software, all with the outstanding support service praised by Rysewyk.

The Unitrends support team really knows the product inside and out and helped in every situation we needed, said Rysewyk. Support is extremely helpful and timely.

After implementing Unitrends, Gillett School District now enjoys daily disk-to-disk (D2D) file backups that are much faster and more reliable than what the old tape backup solution provided. The company also performs archiving using the Unitrends solution with archive disks that are rotated offsite, keeping the original backups on the Unitrends appliance for speedy disaster recovery when needed.

Unitrends is pleased to provide Gillett School District with the data protection solution that is critical to their business, said Maria Ellison, senior vice president, support, Unitrends. Education and municipal customers cannot commit to IT solutions with uncertain year-to-year support costs and an unstable infrastructure. Unitrends prides itself on the service and support that is needed to provide piece of mind for data protection services and we are proud to have Gillett use our products and services.

Unitrends and Spiceworks Partner to Launch New Backup Advisor and Management Features

Manufacturing Representative, Cain-Forlaw Company, Chooses Unitrends Over Barracuda for Complete Data Protection

Columbia, S.C. (PRWEB) December 14, 2011

Unitrends, the leading provider in all-in-one backup and disaster recovery solutions, today announced that Cain-Forlaw Company, a manufacturer representative, selected Unitrends to protect its critical financial and operational data.

After almost losing all of their data when one of their servers crashed, Jon Ogden, Cain-Forlaws IT manager, realized it was necessary to adopt a reliable backup solution to protect the companys data since it was too risky to not have any form of data protection in place.

We came very, very close to complete disaster and losing absolutely everything. Thats when I realized we had to find a solution here that will protect us and that will allow us to recover from a disaster, Ogden said.

Before choosing Unitrends as their data protection provider, Ogden researched several other backup solutions (including Barracuda). However, he was dissatisfied with their inability to provide bare metal backups, back up email in Microsoft Exchange or restore data at the file- and byte-level. With Unitrends Recovery Appliances, Ogden appreciates a simple, easy-to-use disk-based solution that delivers rapid recovery and data security. Unitrends Vault2Cloud services also particularly impresses Ogden since it gives him the option to back up and restore data from an off-site location in addition to protecting his environment on-site. With Unitrends, Ogden knows his data is secure, which gives him greater peace of mind.

I like that I effectively get three different kinds of backup storage. I get the main backup, I get the off-site backup and I get the archive backups. So really, Im triple-protected, Ogden stated. And what I tell people about this is that I think I sleep better at nights and on the weekends because I know that if something happens, its not gonna be a problem at all to get everything back.

When hearing of Cain-Forlaws great satisfaction with their backup solution, Tim Wallick, CFO of Unitrends, shared, We are very pleased that Cain-Forlaw trusts Unitrends for their data protection. Critical data losses like the one they came close to experiencing prior to choosing Unitrends can be very costly to organizations in terms of production downtime and revenue losses. We look forward to protecting Cain-Forlaws data in the future.
