Who is Protecting Your Data this Summer?

Epsom, UK (PRWEB) August 25, 2010

Demand for data recovery services during the summer months continues to increase, according to Kroll Ontrack, the leading provider of data recovery, information management and legal technology products and services – and this year is no exception.

Average global temperatures from January to June 2010 were the warmest on record since 1880, as reported by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA). This warmer weather, in addition to summer storms and other major weather disasters, often leads to data loss incidents for businesses and consumers alike.

In the UK, extreme weather conditions in the north and south this year have also set the stage for an increase in data loss incidents. According to the Met Office, July was wetter than normal across most of the UK – except in the south east, which experienced unusually dry weather. In addition, with more key personnel on holiday during the summer months, the likelihood of data loss due to human error tends to grow as well.

“While data loss can happen at any time, we have seen a distinct increase in demand for recovery services from second to third quarter, which coincides with the onset of the summer holiday season as well as volatile weather conditions,” said Phil Bridge, managing director, Kroll Ontrack UK. “This summer, we have already seen an uptick in the number of data recovery requests.”

Based on global data from 2007 to 2009, Ontrack Data Recovery engineers report that requests for hard drive data recovery services increase an average of 12 percent from second to third quarter, during the months of June, July and August, confirming the seasonal effect on data loss. In the UK, data recovery requests are expected to grow by 15 percent between Q2 and Q3 2010.

In determining the causes of data incidents during the summer season, Robert Winter, chief engineer, Ontrack Data Recovery, Kroll Ontrack, says data loss can be attributed to a variety of factors. “Causes range from IT maintenance-related issues and gaps in IT processes, to floods and elevated temperatures, which can contribute to hard drive failures and data loss in general. Here in the UK, the use of air conditioning is also not as prevalent as in the US, making it more challenging to maintain a cool office environment,” said Winter. “Storms and floods are also significant causes of data loss. Over the past couple of months, we’ve seen an influx of these types of jobs in particular.”

Fortunately, there are several simple steps that enterprise and home users can take to prevent this type of scenario, lessening the chances of a data loss related to extreme weather conditions in the summer.

Business Users

Extreme heat can result in the premature failure of hard drives, while low humidity combined with dust in drought conditions can promote static electricity issues with electrical components. Adjust temperature and humidity control systems accordingly during changing weather conditions.
Ensure the continuity of IT processes and systems through appropriate training of all IT administrators, and plan for backup resources.
Conduct data backups regularly and often, and ensure backups and critical documents are stored offsite.
Consider uploading data to the cloud, which may protect customer data from natural disasters.

Home Users

Install a surge protector and get in the habit of turning off your desktop computer or laptop during a storm to avoid any power strikes or surges caused by lightning strikes.
Backup your data regularly – at least once a month, or more often if possible.
Move important files and information, such as personal documents and photos, to an external USB storage device.
Before leaving on holiday, turn off and unplug your laptop or desktop computer.
Keep your computer hard drive off the ground and in a cool, dry area to prevent overheating and water damage should flooding occur.

ILS Technology and Acclaim Energy Advisors Join Forces to Keep the Lights on in Texas this Summer and Beyond

Boca Raton FL (PRWEB) June 05, 2012

ILS Technology today announced Acclaim Energy Advisors has chosen its deviceWISE M2M Application Platform to support their solution to potential power shortfalls in the state of Texas.

With a booming population and temperatures rising, Texas is facing a power shortage likely to surpass that of summer 2011, which resulted in rolling brownouts throughout the state. Although many public utilities have established demand response incentives, by which customers agree to drop off the grid on needs-based request, fewer than ten percent of commercial and industrial customers currently participate.

Acclaim Energy Advisors has developed an automated service to optimize the public and private sectors participation in demand response programs, taking into account their usage profile and operating characteristics. The ILS Technology deviceWISE M2M Application Platform will extract data from customer devices and equipment and provide real-time information about power consumption at multiple sites across the entire power grid. Together, the companies will enable customers to optimize their power consumption while simultaneously providing the data needed by electricity providers to balance the load and avoid brownouts, blackouts and related damage to customer equipment all with no added tax burden or increase in electricity rates for Texas residents and businesses.

Were extremely pleased to have been chosen by Acclaim Energy Advisors to provide our deviceWISE M2M Application Platform in cooperation with AT&T mobile network services for this important market solution, said Fred Yentz, CEO of ILS Technology. It is rewarding to see our solution offerings used to assist Acclaim Energy Advisors in managing the critical electrical infrastructure in Texas.

Texas is blessed to have a free-standing and independent power grid, as well as rich natural resources, according to John D. Elder, president and CEO of Acclaim Energy Advisors. Unfortunately, even these are not enough to keep up with the increased demand for electric generation. Thankfully, with the help of ILS Technology, we can monitor usage and proactively balance the load to avoid service interruption and damage to mission-critical equipment.

The Acclaim Dynamic Load Optimization 365sm solution supported by ILS Technologys deviceWISE M2M Application Platform will be demonstrated this week at TIA 2012: Inside the Network in Dallas. Visit the M2M Pavilion for more information.

A&I Solutions would like to reveal this week"s Employee of the Week, Janette Olano. Janette is a Technical Consultant on the A&I Service Assurance Team.

(PRWEB) June 13, 2012

Janette has played a major role at A&I Solutions. She led an upgrade for the A&I Solutions website, setup a demo environment for Application Performance Management (which will be used in A&Is APM webinar series), and developed the Wiki site for A&I Solutions. Prior to becoming a consultant with A&I Solutions, Janette was a senior Java software engineer, who was a technical lead that maintained the United Airlines booking engine.

Janette explains, I love development. I love creating an application from scratch–building something from nothing! I may be a product software expert now who deals mostly with implementation, but I always seek for any opportunity to get my hands on coding. Whenever there is a gap in a client’s solution (a missing automated task, need for formatted results, more metrics, etc.), I quickly provide it to them with my scripting skills and expert knowledge of the APM product.

She specializes in Application Performance Management implementation installation, dashboards/alerts customization, report generation, setting up automated tasks thru shell scripting, and customized java plugins for EPAgents.

Specifically, Janette has built services interfacing with GDS/CRS hosts (Apollo, ITA, Covermore, etc.) for the Travel Distribution Platform. Also, Janette was involved in projects containing requirement analysis, client interfacing, team coordination, and design and development.

Since becoming a member of the A&I Solutions team, Janette has worked for SeaWorld, Adventist Health System, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), and is currently working with Liberty Mutual.

Success Story:

While working for Liberty Mutual, Janette displayed her strength in Java development. Recently, she wrote an improved log monitor EPAgent plugin that processes both non-encoded and encoded log files. This feature was not available in Liberty Mutuals current system. She, also, upgraded a web application that monitors Agents and retrieves data from a persistent DB, creating an easier and more convenient process for the firm.

Recommendation:

I’ve worked with Jett for several years and have always been impressed with her. She’s very smart, detail-oriented and has always been a leader within any team she works with. Along with being an excellent developer in existing project environments, she is also able to learn new technologies easily and can quickly adapt to new environments. I highly recommend her. Linda W.
